Song of the Day: Jason Lytle – Yours Truly, The Commuter

Posted on by Ricky in Song of the Day | Leave a comment

I was going to start off this article by writing about how it’s been a long time since Grandaddy called it a day, but then I checked my guy on the internet (wikipedia) and it told me they have apparently reformed, rendering my heartwarming ode to early 2000s nostalgia useless. Instead, I will just leave you with facts.

– Jason Lytle has a new album coming out, called Dept. of Disappearance
– It’ll be his forth album
– Grandaddy got back together and are playing some shows
– I kind of really liked them when I was younger.

Here’s a song from Jason Lytle in the meantime

Song of the Day: Frankie Rose – Know Me

Frankie Rose, first of all, has a great name. Second of all, she makes fabulously melodramatic music. Her new album, Interstellar, is a ten-song adventure in feelings and emotions. My favorite from the record is “Know Me” whose poppy beginning segues into Rose’s smoother vocals, landing in a nicely balanced beat that will stick with you long after the three-minute song is over. If you like Frankie’s original Dum Dum Girls sound, you’ll appreciate the dream-pop influence that makes itself manifest in her newer work. If you’re not a Dum Dum Girls fan, Rose’s sound is unique enough that there’s a good chance you’ll enjoy her solo effort anyway. Either way, who doesn’t need a little melodramatic soundtrack action in their life every once in a while? Indulge yourself.

Song of the Day: Alex Winston – Fire Ant

Much like Sufjan Stevens, Alex Winston is a singer-songwriter from the suburbs of Michigan. Her debut record King Con was released earlier this year but due to my sheer ignorance, I did not know about it until yesterday.

Like Zooey Deschanel’s characters in any show or movie, it’s quirky and all over the map and but comes off as natural and charming instead of sounding forced and annoying, like Nicky Minaj. The music is highlighted by Winston’s opera-trained voice. Like a homemade Jambalaya made from a Cajun grandma of at least sixty years of age, there are many elements introduced but it all comes together very well. The track sounds pretty refreshing, like a cool shower under an Amazon waterfall after a three hour hike.

“Fire Ant” is the first track of this record, and is a great example of the music that Alex Winston has to offer. If you were walking through Costco, and saw a free sample, you would take it, wouldn’t you? Do the same here.

Cover of they Day: Patrick Wolf – Born to Die (Lana Del Rey cover)

Remember Lana Del Rey?

While she might have left our collective mind over the course of the last nine months (mostly due to her tragic SNL performance), it’s hard to forget that period between October to December 2011, when the New Jersey youtube singer was the hottest ticket in town. Patrick Wolf sure didn’t, and as such, has released a cover of “Born to Die.” You might recall this song from the tigers that are in the music video.

Simplifying the original song, Patrick augments his vocals with a simple string section and this track sounds good. Check it out.

Patrick Wolf is touring North America next week, get your tickets.
