Song of the Day: Free Energy – Girls Want Rock

There are bands out there who are always on the fringe of your awareness – you vaguely recognize the name, you know you’ve heard the tune before, you think you’ve read an article about them – until they land squarely in your consciousness with a great track.

I’ve been hearing about Free Energy for a while now as an up and coming indie rock band out of Philadelphia, but I didn’t pay too much attention until I stumbled upon “Girls Want Rock” from their yet to be released album Love Sign. First of all, great name – girls do indeed want rock. Second of all, the song’s got a softer touch to it with some really adorable “ooohs” and “nanananas” in between lines. These guys are playing the Tomorrow Never Knows Fest in Chicago in a couple of weeks – if you’re in the city I’d get on those tickets – I’ve already got mine.

Obvious Song of the Day: Suede – Barriers

Always interesting when, you know, your favorite band comes out with their first new track in ten years after a successful recent reformation. Given their last release was the much maligned A New Morning, I guess most Suede fans would be correct if they approached these new releases with a sense of trepidation. Still, it’s kinda exciting.

Barriers is the first track to be released off their new album, Bloodsports which is due to be released some time this year. Not quite sure what to make of it after three listens – it’s not entirely dramatic as any of their Butler material, not as pop as the material off Coming Up or Head music and definitely not as shitty as the material off A New Morning. I can’t quite place it, although if you listened to the Tears, you could say there are some similarities. There are some soaring guitars and as funny as it is to hear Anderson sing words like ‘lipstick traces’ again, it’s still a welcome addition to my life.

Welcome back.

Song of the Day: Haim – Don’t Save Me

If you pine for the days of the female rocker, if your iTunes is filled with the likes of Whitney Houston, Madonna, TLC, Destiny’s Child and The Cranberries, then this song is going to make your day just the way it made mine.

Haim is a sister trio (already, how could you not love them?) from California who produce “nu-folk–meets–nineties-R&B.” “Don’t Save Me” is their second single from 2012. It’s infectious without being kitschy, it’s retro yet original, and it’s just downright awesome. The world needs more all female bands, so all I can say is I hope these ladies are planning to stick around for a while.

Song of the Day: Palma Violets – Best of Friends

palma violets

New year, a fresh lot of bands trying to seize the day. Such is the case for English band Palma Violets. Sounding more like a late 70s LA punk rock band then any contemporary UK lad act that I’m sure they bound to be compared to, the single “Best of Friends” is one of the catchiest rock tracks I have heard in a while. It was also NME’s song of the year in 2012. Which means ..? Anyways, try listening to this song and then not have the chorus stuck in your head.

Palma Violets are at the Horseshoe, January 24th.
