Song of the Day: The Longwalls – Kowloon

Anytime someone writes about the neighborhood you were born/spent your formulative years, you kind of have to post about it.

Boston rock band The Longwalls wrote an entire EP inspired by Kowloon, the area from Hong Kong where I am from. Their inspiration came from way way back when Kowloon was a walled city. How they managed to do that, I don’t know. Kowloon now days is a lot different, as is Hong Kong.

Here are some random facts about Kowloon

– Chinese translation: 9 Dragons
– Population Density: 43,033 per square kilometer
– Mountains to the north, sea to the south
– Great thai food
– Home of the Ritz Carlton HK, world’s highest hotel and bar. Check out this view:

If you look closely, you can even see my hand!

Anyways, so this band, the Longwalls, released an EP called Kowloon a few days ago. It’s a melancholy type of rock music that you would find on a college radio station in the late 90s. It’s got that kind of feel. Check out the title track.

Song of the Day: Cfit – Don’t Sweat The Small Shit

Cfit is a band from Dublin, Ireland and judging by the likes of what I’ve heard so far, they excel in creating quiet, lush and melancholy rock music that frankly, is rather good.

This track – “Don’t Sweat The Small Shit” – has been around for awhile and it’s one of those tracks that makes you want to buy a xylophone/Glockenspiel. The track has got a quiet power to it and coupled with lovely harmonies, is a great candidate for a song to play on a rainy day. Check it out.

Song of the Day: Jukebox the Ghost – Don’t Let Me Fall Behind

If Jukebox the Ghost is good at one thing (besides constantly touring, endearing themselves to audiences everywhere, and staying under 300 collective pounds) it’s capturing millenials’ angst in upbeat three-to-four minutes songs. Their new single, “Don’t Let Me fall Behind,” is just another example of that skill.

The trio puts together their classic keyboard, guitar and drums combination to create a beautiful song that articulates everything us 25-35 year old worry about: love, loss, the fear of missing out (FOMO), and the quest for that perfect someone. Every time this band puts out a song I am newly convinced they are singing especially to me. I’m sure the majority of their growing base of fans has the same conviction, which makes me confident this up-and-coming band is actually far from falling behind.

Sorta classic Song of the Day: Menswear – Daydreamer

Sorta funny music story this week as former Britpop band Menswear guitarist Chris Gentry tweeted that their debut record, Nuisance finally went platinum, prompting all kinds of hilarity as documented in this exclaim article. Menswear were always a band that was style over substance and ultimately one of the first bands which music rags NME and Select pushed onto unsuspecting crowds with lofty headlines and unsubstantiated claims. Their inevitable failure was to no surprise (think Britpop Lana Del Rey circa early 90s) but still, this is a pretty funny story.

For some transparency, I’ll also post the conversation we had that led to this article
