Song of the Day: Free Energy – Electric Fever

It’s JULY already. This means it’s warm outside and the days are long. It also means it’s cottage season, so fire up those grills, pack up your knapsack and latch onto any white friends you have who have cottages. For me, cottages are about good times and classic rock. I think this is because one of the groups of people I go to cottages with love classic rock and we always end up listening to a local radio station at the cottage. It’s almost always Saturday all request night and all the the requests go something like this:

DJ: “Hey there, what you want to listen?”
Dude: “Hey man, long time listener, first time caller. Really enjoy your show. Me and the boys are here sitting in the garage downing some buds and would love to listen to some Rush”

Nevertheless, classic rock sounding bands have a place in my heart.

This brings me to Free Energy. This American rock act recently released their sophomore album Love Sign and it’s the exact type of record you carry out with you to your nearest lake. Big guitar bursts, frequent cowbells and feel good lyrics populate this record and it’ll have you reaching for your bell bottom jeans in no time.

Song Of The Day: Melvins – In Every Dream Home A Heartache

One expects a certain level of weirdness from The Melvins and frankly, after 30 years, they’ve certainly earned the right to follow whatever creative whims they choose. In fact, I find that they’re often at their best when also indulging in their most “out there” impulses.  One of my favourite albums of theirs is Prick, the experimental noise goof off that they released at the height of their mainstream popularity. So while weirdness is expected, their latest, Everybody Loves Sausages, shows that the band still are able to throw us a a bit of a curveball every now and then.  It’s  a covers album ,which for many bands signals a switch to creative cruise control. The Melvins, however, throw in a few unexpected choices of cover material and use it as an opportunity for collaboration, something they’ve often done in the past, and the results, while mixed, are often quite enjoyable.

One of the more interesting tracks on the album is their cover of Roxy Music’s “In Every Dream Home A Heartache,” featuring Jello Biafra on vocals. Biafra’s take on the song comes across as part tribute to Brian Ferry and part mocking parody. And then the last couple minutes or so of the song are dominated by crazy phaser effects because of course it is. It’s The Melvins after all.

Channeling their inner Rick Astley, Swedish band Club 8‘s new disco-tinged-whooa-oh-ohh track I’m Not Gonna Grow Old is basically what happens when you take the signature Labrador twee song and inject it with a hint of the 80’s. It’s simply, a delightful pop tune that is perfect for your summer soundtrack. I guess we should of seen this coming from Club 8, as the duo’s remix of Amanda Mair’s House was one of my favorite songs of last year. The song is off the group’s 8th album – Above the City which is set to be released off Labrador on May 21st.

Check out this song, it’ll brighten up your day.

Song of the Day: Fossil Collective – Let it Go

I am not quite sure how I feel about the band name Fossil Collective. Whenever I see that name, I think it’s bands comprising of members from Animal Collective and Beach Fossils. However, this band is not that. Instead, Fossil Collective is a band from Leed’s featuring David Fendick and Jonny Hooker. They write pleasant songs. The best way I can describe the song Let it Go is that it sounds like something Zach Braff would have listened to and then immediately write a scene for in that new movie of his. You know, the one he is trying to get all the people who felt that Garden State defined their lives to pay for. Acoustic, harmony, folky ..so I guess it sounds a bit like the Shins. Not a bad thing, their debut album Tell Where I Lie was released last month. Check it out.
