SXSW Song of the Day: Cayucas – Cayucos

If there was a band that sounds like they are from some beach side town in Southern California, it’s probably Cayucas. Basically named after the town of Cayucos, Cayucas is a band whose breezy, laid back, chilled out, semi low fi sound is exactly the type of music you would expect to hear from a band whose members who probably spend their free time surfing, drinking fruity drinks and working at the local seafood shack. Their single Cayucos reminds me of summer on top of all that imagery, which is just perfect on a chilly February day.

Cayucos are currently on tour, opening up for Ra Ra Riot, and will also be at SXSW. Check out this track.

Song of the day: The Hemmingbirds – My Love, Our Time is Now

Two of my biggest pet peeves in music are:

1) songs that devolve into noise
2) yelling

The Hemmingbird’s “My Love, Our Time is Now” turn both of those pet peeves on their head.

First of all, the song begins with random noises and then coalesces into a smooth and silky guitar melody. Second of all, overlaying that melody are the forceful, but not quite at the level of yelling, vocals of Yoo Soo Kim, the guitarist, viola-ist, violinist and frontman of the group. These two things, that are so close to the two things I hate most in music, make me love this song.

The Hemmingbirds (name inspired by Ernest Hemingway – I guess Faulking birds didn’t have quite the same ring to it) have created a passionate, earnest, catchy and memorable track with “My Love, Our Time is Now.” Give it a listen:

Retro Song of the Day: Hot Chip – Over and Over

I am easily infatuated with songs that either 1) have a great beat or 2) have catchy lyrics… so when the two come together – game over – I will loop that four-to-five minute track endlessly through my day for weeks on end. The last song I found to possess this combination is Hot Chip’s Over and Over. The song starts with chimes, progresses to… cowbell and claps? Then brings in the synth. Basically, it’s already fulfilled criterion 1 within the first twenty seconds. When lyrics begin around the :50 mark the song only gets better. Key lines include:

“Laid back, Laid back, Laid back/We’ll give you play back”
And
“Over and over and over and over and over/Like a monkey with a miniature cymbal/The joy or repetition really is in you.”

Can I tell you what exactly it means? No. Can I tell you I love it? Absolutely.

Song of the Day: Teen Girl Scientist Monthly – Summer Skin

It’s freakin cold outside this week. It was so cold that Derek sent me a mms with this image:

as some sort of reminder of what’s to come.

Maybe it’s a beacon of hope. Maybe he thought I had fallen into a pit of despair and was saddled with Seasonal Affective Disorder.

Either way, it reminded me of warmer days.

So does this song.

Summer Skin is a track by Brooklyn act Teen Girl Scientist Monthly and it’s the sort of short, energetic power pop track that can temporarily transport you back into the glory days of summer. The band even posted a music video (view here) which shows them doing things you would expect a bunch of white kids living in Brooklyn would do – sitting around on roof tops, videoing themselves ironically playing in a school yard and of course, going to a parental summer home somewhere and going for a boat ride (because someone always knows someone with access to a boat).

The song is off their debut record Modern Dances out February 26th.
