Song of the Day: Jamaican Queens – Kids Get Away

Jamaican Queens - Wormfood

You know when you hear a song, one of those songs that just punches you in the gut, and makes you smile at the same time? The song you know you could listen to on repeat and never get sick of, and could make it on any mix tape (or online playlist), that you may make? Enter, Jamaican Queens. A few songs on their album Wormfood do it for me, but Kids Get Away is the one that anyone who sees my Rdio history on Facebook knows I listen to at least twice a day.

The song has got this great electronic beat and synth to it, but with these very violent, scary lyrics like “I was covered in mace, lover they cut up your face”. This trio is from Detroit, and if anyone has been following the news, Detroit isn’t the safest place to be right now and the city has  just declared bankruptcy. The songs seems a testament to the unsafe nature of certain neighborhoods. If you watch the disturbing video, it follows a girl as she’s being lovingly stalked by a dude who could be a poster boy for freaky serial killers or pedophiles. At the end of the night after being out with her friends, she’s attacked by a second man in her apartment. As a woman, that shit freaks me out. I won’t tell you how it ends, you can watch it for yourself.

Jamaican Queens are actually playing Handlebar tonight for only seven bones in Kensington Market. I highly suggest you check it out.

Song of the Day: Sky Ferreira – Lost in My Bedroom

I think I mostly like this song because the first verse of the song makes me think that is a ditty from a lost early ’90s 7-Up commercial.

Yet, I have been listening to this song consistently for a while now. The sound is simple, but it’s one of those ear worm songs you can’t get away from. Sky Ferreira is a person whose name probably overshadows her music. I always think of Urban Outfitters or Vice when I think of her name, I don’t know why. If all her songs as delightful as this retro sounding electro pop tune, sign me up. Who names their daughter sky? Is her brother named Earth?

Song of the Day: Postiljonen – Plastic Panorama

Skyer

It’s very rare Swedish artists put out music I don’t like, and Skyer, Postiljonen‘s debut English  full length is no exception. The trio formed in 2011, and describe themselves (according to the last.fm page) as nostalgic day dreamers, and I couldn’t agree more.

Plastic Panorama, my personal favorite on the album paints a beautiful picture with its lush synth and softly sung lyrics. It’s easy to picture yourself in a movie montage as you listen to the song, thinking of days past. The song begins like the intro to an 80’s movie, and when Mia Bøe comes in with her vocals, singing  lyrics like “knew you had a vision, but needed my permission to fly to the night and color the sky, what are you waiting for, well I wanna know, if you felt it all around”  it’s easy to float away and get lost with the song. If you’re trying to get any work done while listening to this album, just stop. This is the perfect lay at the park or the beach with a book album.

Just an add on – the song Supreme, has many M83 like qualities to it, so if you’re a fan of M83, high-tail it to Skyer.

Song of the Day: Manic Street Preachers – Rewind The Film (Featuring Richard Hawley)

It’s not every day one of your favorite bands comes out with a new track. It’s certainly not every day when one of your favorites comes out with a song featuring another one of your favorites. So today, is a good day.

Featuring strings and the contrasting voices of Richard Hawley and James Dean Bradfield (one is smooth, one is less… smooth, you figure out which), this seven minute track is the first song off a new Manics album of the same title (out in September). Let’s hope the trio gets off their asses and tour North America this time.
