Concert Review: Paul Kornmuller, February 21, Theory Bar

I kind of forgot people go out on Thursdays (or Mondays or Tuesdays or Wednesdays or Sundays… or even some Saturdays) but this week’s live music performance at Chicago’s Theory bar by Paul Kornmuller was a welcome reminder.

Paul took the stage at 6:30 and had the bar rocking well past 9:30 (when I left… honestly he may have rocked it well past midnight but yours truly was snooooozing by then). Mr. Kornmuller and his star singer covered a huge range of favorites, from “Footloose” to “Jack and Diane” with no banter and all swag.

The duo had an awesome knack for pulling together improvised medleys of feel-good-sing-along tunes that had all generations at the bar tapping their feet, doing their best to croon with the pair, and flat-out dancing at times.

Paul’s incredible ease on his guitar and with vocals kept the whole gig smooth and perfect for a rowdy sports bar. While the duo was unobtrusive in their manner, they really ended up stealing the show from the big screens blasting NBA and NHL around the crowd. All eyes were on him and his partner as beers were enjoyed and chicken wings were devoured.

Paul and his band have an active tour going around the Chi-town area at some pretty groovy pubs – check them out! You won’t regret it – and, if you’re like me, you can use it as an occasion to casually mention to EVERYONE that you were out past 8 on a weeknight. #YOLO as the kids say.

Sometimes, all it really takes for a band to get noticed is having a name that’s memorable for some reason. Psychedelic Porn Crumpets certainly checks that box with a name that is equally excellent and ridiculous, a trait they share with fellow Aussies King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard.

And after giving their latest single “Keen For Kick Ons?” a listen, it becomes clear that the band shares more than just a predilection for silly names with King Gizzard, they also produce the same kind of blissful, fuzzed out psych-rock as their countrymen. Solid stuff indeed.

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets play Hotel Vegas Annex on March 16 at 12:00am and probably a bunch more shows throughout SXSW week as well.

SXSW Song Of The Day: Cedric Burnside – Hard To Stay Cool

Cedric Burnside‘s latest album is entitled Benton County Relic, and while he’s been at this for awhile, it’s a pretty safe bet that Burnside himself is not the relic being referenced in the title. At 40, he’s far too young for that, but with eight albums under his belt and getting his start playing drums with his grandfather, legendary Mississippi bluesman R.L. Burnside, back when he was only 13, he certainly qualifies as a veteran performer.

The video for “Hard To Stay Cool” opens up with Burnside giving a bit of a lesson on the blues and its importance to African American culture before it segues into the song itself, a languid, slow burning blues about the challenges of trying to keep your cool during hard times. Check it out.

Cedric Burnside plays Cooper’s BBQ on March 13 at 10:00pm and on March 15 at 1:00am.

SXSW Song Of The Day: Austin Lucas – Immortal Americans

Every now and then a song just jumps out at you and demands your attention.

Such was the case with “Immortal Americans”, the title track off of Bloomington, Indiana alt country singer-songwriter Austin Lucas‘ latest album. Upon hearing that tune as part of a playlist, I had to stop what I was doing, listen, and find out exactly who was behind it. And then I listened to the song all over again.

First it was Lucas’ voice that caught my attention, then the melody, and then finally the lyrics: a portrait of American heartland culture and a celebration of the power of rock and roll that elevates it all to a new sort of gospel – “the sound of immortal Americans.” Check it out.

Austin Lucas plays the Continental Club on March 15 at 11:00pm.
