Whenever there are festivals, there are parties. What makes TIFF Parties so special is that there are STARS AND CELEBRITIES. Imagine how much better your life will be if you only get that selfie with that person you see on the movie theatre or at home in your pajamas on Netflix.

We had the pleasure to be invited to the TIFF after party for Deepwater Horizon, a movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Kurt Russell, Kate Hudson (Penny Lane) and a slew of other actors. It’s about the BP oil rig that exploded in the Gulf and ruined the Gulf of Mexico forever. Anyways, I wasn’t invited to the actual movie, but the after party. I had never been to a TIFF movie after party so it was a must go for me.

How does one even review a party? Let’s get to the essentials:

Bar: Open. It was sponsored by Johnnie Walker and they had Johnnie Walker available. That was a good moment. They didn’t pour too much at a time, so I had to make more trips to the bar than I wanted.

Food: Before the party, I was like .. do I go eat? But then I decided that these parties must have free food, and since a lot of people are from Hollywood, they probably don’t eat anyway so there’ll be plenty of free food. I was right! Food available included:

– beef empanadas (delicious)
– korean fried chicken (it was good, but pieces were too small)
– chicken tacos (chicken was nice, but nothing special)
– grilled cheese (was quite good)
– cheeseburger (the weakest of the bunch)

Overall, the beef empanadas were quite good. It was actually pleasant to see that no matter what party you are at, and how precious people are, when they see free food, its plain to see we are all vultures in the end.

People: Damn, people dressed up! I came from my soccer game so I was wearing shorts, and I was definitely the only person wearing shorts. Most men were dressed in dress shirts and suits while the women all had fancy dresses.

The party seemed to be broken down into three groups of people and they were located in this formation:

tiff

Rich and Famous – These people are rich and famous, had booths and the really famous people had security guards outside the booths. Kate Hudson and Kurt Russell were there, but they were sitting in the booths and mostly mingled amongst themselves. What do really rich people talk about? Probably stocks. Anyways, they didn’t mingle with the peasants.

Industry types – These people were dressed real hard and lingered above just outside the booth, waiting for their golden ticket or trying to be noticed. They were in the industry, but weren’t quite important enough to make the booths. Half were probably waiters in LA but today, they are almost stars because they are at a TIFF after party.

Randos – I was a rando, and the randos were definitely in the middle. They were mostly people who worked for sponsors, won contests or general people who knew someone who knew someone. They also tried to sneak the most photos and the most ravenous for food and drinks. Some people were really happy they were there, but seemed oblivious to the fact that they will never be accepted among the elites.

Anyways, I think I am supposed to say that the party was hosted by Johnnie Walker and the cast was there, which are both true. You can’t really go wrong at a TIFF afterparty, so if you get the chance, definitely go.

TURF Preview

turf

It’s September, that could only mean one thing in 2016 – TURF. The fourth installation of The Toronto Urban Roots Festival will take place this weekend and hopefully it will not rain or my life will be ruined for those few hours. As luck would have it, Riotfest packed their bags and went back to the states this year so TURF will not have any competition this weekend.

Upon first viewing of the TURF lineup, it’s hard not to notice that the lineup’s diversity is a bit … lacking. However, implying that the TURF lineup is mostly full of middle-aged white men would be ludicrously shallow and too easy even for this blog, which mostly takes the easiest way out possible.

Instead, we will take a look at the bands playing and show how they are a diverse bunch.

Here’s some acts we are looking at

Friday

Dropkick Murphys – Boston Irish Bros – Always a good time.

Explosions in the Sky – guitar loving bros – For those who actively hang out in guitar shops. New record is solid.

Jake Bugg – British Soul Bro – For those who love their sensitive singer songwriters with a cup of tea and some biscuits

The Hives – Swedish Rock bros – Long overdue in their return, The Hives are awesome live

Margo Price – Not a Bro – Country singer Margo Price has been on a steady rise, so much so she gets one of the first slots of a music festival on a Friday afternoon. Solid stuff if you can make it.

Simone Denny – Not a Bro (pt 2) – Toronto soul singer Simone Denny gets the great opportunity to be the opener for TURF, and those who make it there in time will be awarded with the most diverse artist on the bill. As a bonus, most people can go see Simone during their lunch hour and then go back to work.

James Bay – Hat Bro – How is this guy headlining?

Saturday

Ween – Real Bro Bros – Reminds me of being in college in the US in the 90s. Although I have never experienced this

Barenaked Ladies – Innocent Canadian Fun bros – This set will just be all sing-alongs. IF I had a milion dollars..I can’t buy a house (in Toronto)

LUSH – NOT BROS – I am so excited to see Lush. If you don’t know them, you are missing out. Listen to this song:

SO GOOD. BE THERE.

Guided By Voices – DRUNK ASS Bros – They might play through 40 songs and drink a 40 during their set. It’ll be a blast

The Sheepdogs – Long haired bros – 3 out of 4 Sheepdog members have long hair.

Whitehorse – That Bro who brings his wife to bro’s night bro – Say what you want about Whitehorse, but the couple has been on fleek* recently

*Term that kids told me means cool or some shit.

Sunday

Death Cab For Cutie – Emo Bro – You’ll be singing out loud to “The Sound of Settling” no matter how hard you try to be cool.

Jimmy Eat World – American College Bro – Oh gawd 20 year old me wants scream the chorus to “The Middle” out loud so bad. Bucket list concert sing-along. Everything, everything will be just fine.

Matthew Good – Apparitions Bro, Apparitions – No lie, I saw Matthew Good Band when I was 18 and they signed a free poster in Edmonton and that was an alright night.

The New Pornographers – Where’s Neko Case, Bro, Bro – Where’s Neko Case? Does it Matter? New Pornographers will always put on a good show and this time around will be no exception.

The Belle Game – Asians representing (not a Bro) – The Belle Game put out a beautiful record a few years ago and they are back at it.

As you can see, the lineup is actually quite diverse.

Who are we kidding, diversity aside, this is a helluva festival and I’ll see you there this weekend.

Comedy Review: Come What Mayhem! (Second City)

Posted on by Ricky in Everything | Leave a comment

How does one really review comedy?

I asked this last time and I’m still not sure. There really is no sure fire metric, humor is so subjective.

Anyways, Come What Mayhem is the new sketch comedy show from the Second City crew. The main theme of this show can be described as first world issues in modern times.

You have to hand it to the writers, they pulled no punches. Every hot topic you have discussed with your friends and coworkers are put on the table. Pop culture, weight issues, online dating, transgender issues, racism and terrorism all have their turn during the two hour(ish) show. Some will have you in laughter, some might feel awkward (the occasional skit traded in humor for lectures, it seemed) but most will have you nodding in agreement. It is very much a reflection of a lot of what is going on in the world today put through the lens of all too real skits. Those looking for a bit of escape will find no solace. While those topics are funny, I found some of the skits which stepped away from the modern news cycle to be more enjoyable, simply because I couldn’t quite tell where it was going. Perhaps it was the escapist in me, I don’t know.

it is refreshing to see a show be so unafraid to tackle hot button issues and the cast displayed a wide variety of talents with a good knack for physical humor. All in all, you can’t go wrong with some comedy any night of the week. Here’s some info about the shows. Be warned, there is audience participation so if you are shy, don’t sit too close :)

Come What Mayhem plays until January 2nd at The Second City Toronto Mainstage Theatre (51 Mercer Street)
Show runs Tuesday to Thursday at 8pm, Friday and Saturday at 7:30pm and 10:00pm, and Sunday at 7:30pm.

Songs Of The (Labour) Day: A Panic Manual Labour Day Playlist

Posted on by Paul in Everything, Song of the Day | 1 Comment

It’s labour day, a day dedicated to honouring workers by giving (most of) us the day off. In recognition of this day, here’s a bunch of songs:

Hazel Dickens – They’ll Never Keep Us Down
Labour day has its roots in the labour movement and one of the first groups to organize was the coal miners, because of course such dismal and dangerous work would inspire people to fight for better working conditions. If you’ve ever seen the films Harlan County USA or Matewan (both about coal miners), you might have noticed the music of Hazel Dickens in their soundtracks. Hazel is a boss, though not in the sense of her being on the side of management, just to make things clear.

Dolly Parton – 9 To 5
Dollay Parton is, like Hazel, a strong Southern woman singing about the plight of the worker who is “barely gettin’ by” because it’s “It’s all takin’ and no givin.'” Amen, sister.

Dolly Parton plays the Molson Canadian Amphitheatre this Friday, September 9, which everyone should go see, because it’s Dolly.

Geto Boys – Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangsta
Keeping with the theme of soundtracks to films about people who hate their jobs and hate their boss, here’s a classic from the Office Space soundtrack. Got a case of the Mondays? Listen to this:

Loverboy – Working For The Weekend
You want a piece of my heart? You better start from the start … by giving me a fair wage and decent working conditions. OK, that’s likely not what Mike Reno and co. were singing about, but everybody loves a good ’80s rock song, so just go with it. Not sure what the first two and a half minutes of pointless band chit chat in the video is all about, but once you make it past that point? C’mon baby, let’s go!

Carly Rae Jepsen – Store
Sure, most of us have the day off today, but there are a few stores still open – this one goes out to the folks working in those stores. Here’s a video someone made for “Store” using footage from Mannequin, I guess because that movie takes place in a store.

Rihanna – Work
One more song going out to all of you that work so hard every damn day:
