SXSW Song of the Day: Geto Boys – Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster

So me and Vik went to Portland on a road trip last week, and of course on the way there, my ipod hit up Glass Candy’s track Geto Boys, a homage to the rap trio Geto Boys and their song “Mind Playing Tricks On Me.” I then mentioned to Vik how I keep on expecting NXNE to book these guys for their Sunday rap show, since in the past few years they have had De La Soul, Pharcyde and Digable Planets on the bill. Similar acts from a similar era.

Guess what?

I don’t need to wait until June. Today it was announced that Geto Boys will be playing the Red Bull Sound Select Party in SXSW. For those of you who aren’t familiar, Geto Boys are a rap group from the early 90s best known for a few hits, namely Mind Playing Tricks On Me and Damn It Feels Good To Be A Gangster. The songs are hilarious and also, sound great. So basically I’m pretty excited about this announcement.

Also, someone made a youtube video with Geto Boys and Muppets a few years ago. How do you beat that?

SXSW Song of the Day: F(X) – Electric Shock

SXSW is all about expanding your circles, hearing new things and meeting new people. Surely most people don’t go to Austin to check out K-Pop bands, but given the success of PSY, Korean inspired food trucks and Samsung, it’s not hard to say that South Korea is definitely getting some hype right now. If people blogged about countries for whatever reason, they would be very much blogged about.

F(X) is a all female Korean K-Pop band. They were formed by an entertainment group called SM Entertainment. The five members are Victoria, Amber, Luna, Sulli, and Krystal, so basically a bunch of Korean ladies with stripper names. Looks and names aside, their electronic pop music has been released to great success in Korea and following the success of PSY, they probably want a slice of the tasty American pie. They are the only K-Pop band to play in Austin, so it’s definitely something to check out. Take a look

SXSW Song Of The Day: Bleeding Rainbow – Drift Away

Butterfly in the sky.  I can go twice as high.  Take a look, it’s in a book … a bleeding rainbow?  Yes, as the story goes, Philadelphia’s Bleeding Rainbow was once known as Reading Rainbow, but apparently PBS and LeVar Burton wouldn’t stand for it and thus the name change.  Truthfully, it’s a way better name this way – the juxtaposition of imagery sounds cooler (and bloodier) while still evoking nostalgic memories of the series.  Also evocative of the past is their sound, which definitely has a bit of a ’90s edge to it, with the song “Drift Away,” off their recently released Yeah Right, reminding me a bit of Jale.  Check it out.

SXSW Song Of The Day: Harry Taussig – Rondo In D On Southern Themes

This March, countless young new bands will be flocking to Austin hoping to make their big break.  Some will be relative novices, only having played a handful of shows and looking to prove themselves.  That story will likely be  fairly common one at SXSW.  That story is not Harry Taussig’s story.  Taussig, a contemporary of John Fahey who plays a similar style of American Primitive guitar, released his first album, Fate Is Only Once, back in 1965 and is just now releasing his sophomore effort, Fate Is Only Twice.  Not only that, but Taussig will be performing his first ever live show at SXSW. 

Harry Taussig plays at 8:00 PM at St. David’s Bethel Hall on Thursday, March 14.
