Song of the Day: VV Brown – The Apple

There’s changing your musical direction and then there’s CHANGING YOUR MUSICAL DIRECTION.

VV Brown‘s new album, Samson & Delilah is such a departure from her previous work that it’s hard to believe it comes from the same person. Gone are the bubble gum nostalgic node to 60’s pop sound of Travelling Like a Light, instead it is replaced by gritty throbbing heavy electronics and a more operatic vocal style that some would compare to Grace Jones. The results are fantastic. Absolutely fantastic.

The Apple is one of the singles off the album and it’s a great example of this new direction. It also has a messed up music video (part of a series of videos that VV Brown is releasing). It’s well worth your time to check out.

Song of the Day: FIDLAR – Awkward (Featuring Kate Nash)

FIDLAR

SO CAAAAAAAAAAL

FIDLAR are a skate punk band from California. Are there any other type of skate bands from California? Why are they all punks? I’m sure some of them are really nice cardigan wearing people who also listen to Belle & Sebastian. Where are their music? Anyways, FIDLAR rode the hype train earlier this year, but it was this random single and not any track from their self titled debut that caught my attention. This song kind of originated in 2012, but they recorded it again this year with Kate Nash so that qualifies as a 2013 song, right? right? Think Moldy Peaches meets Nada Surf with a super awesome chorus, dude.

Song of the Day: The Mary Onettes – Don’t Forget (to forget about Me)

It’s that time of year where everyone looks back at the year that was and wonder to themselves “What great songs have I missed this year that will make me look like a chump next year?” Maybe that’s me. I don’t know.

The Mary Onettes are a band off one of my favorite record labels – Labrador. This Swedish group released their new album Hit The Waves earlier this year. I recently revisited this album and let’s just say I am glad I have. I am currently obsessed with this track. It’s got a great mixture of drama and pop to it and one killer chorus. It deserves your time. I’m sure you can spare yourself a minute or two from reading buzzfeed listicles to check it out.

Song of the Day: Clare Maguire – Half Hearted Love

The Stevie Nicks bombast and glitz of the first record are gone from Claire Maguire‘s latest and in return, here’s a wistful song that might as well have sprung from a failed hookup after a Janis Joplin concert. With the aid of Jarvis Cocker’s writing talents, Half Hearted Love sees Maguire mine further back into pop music history with a sound that shimmers as much as it wallows in late hippie nostalgia. Perfect for the wintry nights creeping up on us now, inside by the fireplace with a tall glass of Oban.
