Every year at SXSW, Austin’s own Black Joe Lewis always plays somewhere. Despite my best efforts, I have always missed this group. After listening to the track “Come to My Party” off upcoming album Electric Slave, I can officially announce that I feel like a fool for doing so. Some bands just sound like they would sound good live. Just listening to this track, I can already imagine a ton of funk and a ton of soul. I can imagine Joe Lewis conducting a feverish dance session among the crowd and everyone having a blast. It’s good, energetic music – perfect for Mondays. Check it out

I was just going to wait until the 8 minute version of this song was available for streaming, but who knows when that is happening. Anyways, Crying Your Heart Out is a single off the DELUXE version of Ultramarine from Canadian band Young Galaxy. It’s fantastic. It’s like the 80’s song I never knew I loved. One of the most catchy choruses I have heard all year. Young Galaxy is one of those bands who seem to get better with each release. You would think that happens for most bands, but it doesn’t. I’m not sure how I feel about bands that release “deluxe” versions of their albums – it seems to punish real fans who buy their records right away, but then again, if Bieber can do it, why not?

The deluxe version of Ultramarine comes out September 24th, 2013. The non deluxe version is out now.

Song of the Day: MMX – Tremor

Judging from their press photo, it would appear that Oxford group MMX are a very serious band. Why aren’t they smiling? You are in a band! Anyways, this song – Tremor is a moody and atmospheric little tune. Kinda reflects their press photo, in a way. It’s off an EP of the same name and sounds rather well crafted for a new band. Judging by this track and some of their other material, it would appear to me that they will be pretty popular at some point in the near future. What is it with Oxford bands? Why are they always moody? Take a look

Basement Jaxx was one of my favorite sets at Coachella almost ten years ago and I have never been able to see them since. With a new single and impending release on the horizon, I hope this changes. What a Difference Your Love Makes is a song off 37 Adventures, the latest release from the British duo. It is scheduled to be released at the end of September. It features some UK singer called Sam Brookes and is the beats and sounds of the song is just as frenetic as you would expect from Basement Jaxx. This just means it’s perfect for the dance floor. Check it out.
