SXSW Song of the Day – Babeheaven – Human Nature

UK Duo Babeheaven was slated to play SXSW last year, but obviously were unable to do so. Now they will be playing this year for SXSW Online which is a bit unfortunate, because I think they would have made a lot of fans if they had an actual live showcase this year.

They sound remarkably polished for a relatively new act, and I’m sure much of that will be accredited to Jamie Travis’s production. Regardless, the duo’s music is built around singer Nancy Anderson’s great vocals.

Check out their song “Human Nature”, the hazy vibe of which has elements of ’90s trip hop but is not quite the same. Kinda like when you eat southern Indian curry instead of Northern. It’s kinda similar, but in some ways, completely different. Weird analogy I know, but that’s 2021.

SXSW Song of the Day: The Lazy Eyes – Where’s My Brain

Remember live shows? I can’t wait to go back to one. I miss the energy, the pulse and just the noise of live music. Listening to the song “Where’s My Brain???” from Australian group The Lazy Eyes makes me realize this would be an amazing show to see live. Would definitely totally lose it – this song’s just an adventure, moving in and out of whatever wave you are on, and just when you think it’s over, it comes rip roaring back again. Who isn’t screaming to this track at the end? Who isn’t just moving around manically? You are making new friends at this show.

Anyways, until that happens, check them out at SXSW Online.

While our focus over the years has primarily been on the music during SXSW, we’ve also kept an eye on the film festival portion of SouthBy for quite a while now and one of the films that’s caught our eye for this year’s edition is Without Getting Killed Or Caught.

The film, initially scheduled to premiere at last year’s SXSW prior to its cancellation, tells the story of the complicated relationship between legendary Texas singer-songwriter Guy Clark, his wife Susanna and another Texas legend, Townes Van Zandt. Featuring interviews with the likes of Rodney Crowell, Steve Earle, and Vince Gill and narration by Sissy Spacek taken from Susanna’s diaries, it’s sure to be an interesting look at a moment in Texas music history.

Take a look at the film’s trailer below as well as a performance by Clark of “L.A. Freeway”, the lyrics to which gave the film its title.

SXSW Online takes place March 16-20, 2021.

And with the start date of SXSW Online fast approaching, the festival has just dropped a bunch of names for the second round of acts performing at SXSW this year.

Among the notable names just announced are No Joy, Jambinai, Lambert, Iceage, and Black Country, New Road, but today we turn the spotlight on Oxford’s Enjoyable Listens, because, really, isn’t an enjoyable listen essentially what we’re all looking for in a new band? Yes, yes it is.
