SXSW Song Of The Day: Moving Panoramas – Baby Blues

Today, SXSW released their third announcement of performers (and largest so far) for this year’s festival, taking place from March 8 – 17. And while there are quite a few notable names, including Edie Brickell and New Bohemians, Illuminati Hotties, Priests, and Toronto’s own Doomsquad and Odonis Odonis, we’ll take the opportunity today to shine the spotlight on an Austin based band from that list – Moving Panoramas.

Led by frontwoman and songwriter Leslie Sisson, the band will be releasing their sophomore album In Two on February 22 via Modern Outsider and playing a bunch of shows at SXSW in support of it. “Baby Blues” is the lead single off of that album, a breezy, driving little number that opens with a lyric that almost sounds as if it were describing SouthBy itself: “Here we are/Another year/Same time, same spot.”

Yeah, that about sums it up – just a couple of months to go before all the SXSW devotees are in that same spot at the same time again. Looking forward to it.

Song Of The Day: Myrkur – Bonden og Kragen

Following yesterday’s post on the Hedvig Mollestad Trio, we continue on with the general theme of Scandinavian women making cool music with this folky number from Denmark’s Myrkur.

Primarily known as a black metal musician, Myrkur (aka Amelie Bruun) has always taken influence from the sounds of the past, but with “Bonden og Kragen”, Bruun delves completely into those sounds, offering up a beautiful and haunting take on a traditional Danish folk song that fits nicely within the folk tradition while also fitting in quite well with the rest of her repertoire. Blurring the lines between jazz, fusion, metal, noise and rock, “Bewitched, Dwarfed And Defeathered” is the latest single from Norway’s Hedvig Mollestad Trio off of their upcoming album Smells Funny, out January 18 on Rune Grammofon.

“Bewitched, Dwarfed And Defeathered” highlights the talents of the impressively accomplished trio (made up of guitarist Hedvig Mollestad, bassist Ellen Brekken, and drummer Ivar Loe Bjørnstad), but things really start to heat up in the last minute or so of the tune as Mollestad totally lets loose with the guitar heroics. I saw Sundara Karma two years ago at SXSW because I was too lazy to go to another venue and once again, my laziness was rewarded. The group, despite being new at the time, looked like rock stars and their Brit pop influenced songs definitely left a mark. I really enjoyed their album and was looking forward to seeing them make the big time.

Well, they never quite achieved the success (at least overseas) that I expected, but now they are back and once again, their music has a grip on my daily playlist.

Listen to this song – it’s catchy and fun and definitely got some Bowie vibes.
