Cover Song of the Day: Choir! Choir! Choir! – Cum on Feel the Noize (Slade)

Toronto – Apparently there is a Toronto choir collective who have been getting together every week since February to sing covers of classic rock songs. They are called Choir! Choir! Choir! and I first encountered them on Thursday for the Summerworks Opening Party. Comprising of over thirty individuals, Choir! Choir! Choir! is what it is, a bunch of people singing songs you enjoy loudly. I found the experience to be completely charming (except for the drunk theatre people screaming at the band) and I like the idea of a choir covering classic tracks. They have done many covers which you can find on their soundcloud page. This is a cover of Slade. Check it out.

Songs that remind me of the OC of the Day: Joshua Hyslop – Nowhere Left to Go

Toronto – Thanks to The OC, all acoustic melodramatic folksy songs by singer-songwriters will forever be associated with the show. Joshua Hyslop isn’t even from California, or the United States. He’s a folk singer from Vancouver with a voice designed to remove a girl’s underwear. Soothing and intimate in every way possible, Joshua recently released an EP titled Cold Wind. The first track from the EP, entitled “Nowhere Left to Go,” is a good sample of this man’s music. It really could be some scene from the OC episode, probably from the second or third season when Marissa was constantly crying and wondering if she was a lesbian. Anyways, I’m getting sidetracked, check this track out.

Where is Mischa Barton these days? (besides faking British accents)

Song of the Day: Pains of Being Pure at Heart – Heart in Your Heartbreak

Toronto – The last time I saw Pains of Being Pure at Heart, their monitor went on fire and they had to cut their show short. However, they have been making amends ever since. The band released an excellent sophomore effort – Belong – and have been touring the world since. They played the last official in-house show at Sonic Boom yesterday, and they are playing Opera House tonight for those who want to financially contribute to the band’s success.

I’ve always been fascinated by their live show. On album, their melodies and light vocal deliveries shine, whereas their live shows resemble a lighter less expensive version of a My Bloody Valentine show. Regardless of delivery, this song is one of the standout tracks from this album. Catchy in all the right places, Heart in Your Heartbreak is a perfect example of all the tools that this Brooklyn band is blessed with.

They are at Opera House tonight

Cover song of the Day: Mayer Hawthorne – Don’t Turn the Lights On (Chromeo cover)

Maxville – Los Angeles’s singer/songwriter/producer Mayer Hawthorne recently released a free EP consisting of covers, which could be found here. On this EP is a cover of one of my favorite Chromeo tracks, a stripped down lounge version of “Don’t Turn the Lights On.” This track does all the things a good interpretative cover should do, which is add elements of the current artist’s sound while retaining some essence of the original artist’s work. Check it out while drinking a rusty nail (I know its only 12:30, but it is Friday :p)
