New Orleans-by-way-of-Detroit singer-songwriter Esther Rose’s sophomore album You Made It This Far, released late last month on Father/Daughter Records, is an impressive collection of classic sounding folk/country tunes.

From the plaintive tone of opening track “Always Changing” to the bouncy “Handyman” to wistful closer “Don’t Blame It On The Moon“, it’s a solid album throughout, with “Only Loving You” standing out as one of the highlights. The video for “Only Loving You” was filmed at New Orleans’ St. Roch Tavern, which offers up pinball, karaoke, and a $15 dollar haircut + beer combo. Seems like a pretty happening spot.

Esther Rose plays The Horseshoe Tavern on September 17 and 18 opening for Nick Lowe and Los Straitjackets. Haircut not included.

Song Of The Day: Vivian Girls – Something To Do

I can’t really say that any band getting back together surprises me at all anymore, but I will admit that Vivian Girls putting out something new kind of snuck up on me. Between Cassie Ramone’s solo career and Katy Goodman’s work as La Sera over the last few years, I wasn’t necessarily expecting them to reunite for a new album, but it’s certainly a welcome surprise.

The band’s upcoming fourth record, Memory, is due to be released September 20th on Polyvinyl Records. Check out the video for first single “Something To Do” below:

Song Of The Day: Prism Bitch – Tits Off

“I want you to dance your tits off!”

That lyric, taken from Prism Bitch‘s “Tits Off”, certainly provides an evocative bit of imagery. And having seen the Albuquerque five piece live and in action this past March during South By Southwest, i can confirm that their high energy show does indeed make one want to get up and dance. Of course, it being an early afternoon performance during the tail end of SXSW, the band only got the crowd mildly moving during that particular set.

Still, that brief SXSW set was impressive enough, and I’m sure that a full blown club show would make for an even better setting in which to catch the band. And those interested in doing so will soon get the chance, as the band are heading out on tour soon as support for Built To Spill‘s upcoming Keep It Like A Secret anniversary tour. That tour hits Toronto’s Phoenix Concert Theatre on September 20, 2019. Check it out. And check out the video for “Tits Off” from the band’s self titled EP below:

Bonus: Check out the live video for the band’s collaboration with Built to Spill on a cover of The Kinks classic “Waterloo Sunset.”

Song Of The Day: Propagandhi – Letter Of Resignation

Happy Labour Day! In honour of the day, have a listen to Propagandhi’s “Letter Of Resignation”, a song not so much about work but about quitting you job and more importantly, about reimagining the way we do things and how we see the idea of “work” itself. While John K. Samson rerecorded the track on The Weakerthans’ first album Fallow, his original version recorded back when he was a member of Propagandhi drives the point home a little further with its spoken word coda:

It’s like being sick all the time, I think, coming home from work, sick in that low-grade continuous way that makes you forget what it’s like to be well. We have never in our lives known what it is to be well. What if I were coming home, I think, from doing work that I loved and that was for us all. What if I looked at the houses and the air and the streets, knowing they were in accord, not set against us. What if we knew the powers of this country moved to provide for us and for all people. How would that be, how would we feel and think and what would we create?
