Song of the Day: The Stone Roses – Made of Stone

Sometimes it takes a band’s reunion announcement to remind you just how much you love them. When the Stone Roses announced their reunion and impending world tour last week, it was met with equal parts elation and trepidation. Despite having a band like Pulp wriite a song about going to a Stone Roses concert, the band was never viewed as a great live band and given the years between gigs, you can understand the hesitancy on many’s behalf.

When I heard about the Roses reunion, I did what many others probably did – put on their self title debut and gave it another trip around the block. It’s easy to forget that Stone Roses’ debut record, with the splashy paint cover, is still one of the most iconic records to be released in the past quarter century.

Unlike some records, father time has not stripped this album of it’s greatness. Brimming with excitement, filled with Beatlesque melody and powered by a rhythm section that can only be Mani and Reni, it becomes pretty obvious how this album became the the defining album of one generation (Baggy/Madchester) and the forefather of another (Britpop).

Listening to the album once again, I am now excited for the tour. It will be nice to hear some of my favorites live, including this track- Made of Stone. A single off the record, the first time you listen to this track you’ll think it’s familiar but really, there’s nothing quite like it – the sing along chorus, the perfectly timed bass lines and John Squire’s top notch guitar work to end off the song. It’s just a magnificent song. Check it out.

Sick Remix of the Day: Tyson – After You’re Gone (Magician Remix)

Not quite sure who this Tyson character is or where he came from but this track is absolutely sick and primed for dance floors all across the globe. Dude’s got a good voice and the song sounds like it’s straight out of an ’80s disco. Can’t turn that down, check it out.

Music Video(s) of the ____: Papermaps – Reunion, Ruby Spirit – Caligari

I don’t really watch music videos very much these days but when I do, it’s Dos Equis it’s generally because

a) The music video is good
b) I can’t figure out a way of downloading the mp3, therefore have to resort the the crappy youtube quality version to listen to it
c) I know people in the music video and think it’s amusing that I know people who make music videos
d) Accidentally clicked on a link while watching random youtube videos of say, a goat vs an eagle

The following videos from local bands Papermaps and Ruby Spirit certainly measure up to these requirements and thus, are worth mentioning. It’s pretty cool to know that bands still take the time to make a proper music video and I hope they can follow the Rebecca Black business model and gain millions of dollars from it, but realistically, a good music video is a way to rise above the noise that is the indie music blogosphere.

Papermaps – Reunion
The premise of this video is fairly straight forward and obvious – the band asked their fans to submit videos answering the timeless question – “If you could write some words of advice to 16 year old you, what would you say?”. I think they got the idea from some movie or something. Anyways, the answers from the fans are cute and endearing, with phrases such as “be yourself”, “stay in school”, “follow your dreams”, etc. Ever the thinker, I thought about it and here are the five things I would send to myself.

* invest heavily in Apple Shares post 1998, borrow money from Uncle
* Super Bowl XLII – New York Giants 17, New England Patriots 14
* Maybe don’t leave that Perez Hilton party at SXSW, you know, just in case Kanye shows up and plays a secret show
* Maybe don’t spend a few thousand on SLR’s and equipment then suddenly decide you don’t like taking photographs
* Always look both ways before crossing Granville street in the summer of 2001

Anyways, the music video is creative, endearing and sound tracked by a stellar upbeat indie pop track. Hard to do much better than this given the low budget the band probably had.

The Ruby Spirit – Caligari

Taking the completely opposite direction, The Ruby Spirit chose not to crowd source their music video, instead, they chose to spend almost an entire year creating a stop motion video for their song Caligari which to me, is a way cool way to pronounce the crappy city of Calgary (I’m from Edmonton, I’m predisposed to hating the neighbors down south). Directed by respected person Mike Walters, the music video was inspired by the 1920 German film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari supposedly and features some creative visuals and cannibalism, two things that always go well together. The video also features Alex Pulec in his trademarked striped shirt look. Have a look

The Ruby Spirit play The Horseshoe Tavern this Saturday

Papermaps probably play sometime in the near future.

Song of the Day: VHS or Beta – Under the Sun

VHS or Beta first appeared on my radar in 2004, in the initial early 2000s garage-disco Yeah Yeah Yeahs-The Rapture led Brooklyn/East Side rock explosion that seemed to spawn many many bands (!!!, Stellarstarr*, Elefant, Bravery, etc the list could go on). Their debut record, Night on Fire was a energetic, catchy and pre-washed for the dance floor. The lead single off that album, Night on Fire was an especially great track, but unfortunately, the band was lost in the shuffle and probably never got the recognition that they deserved in retrospect. Their sophomore record –Bring on the Comets came at a time just when the NY revival disco-funk-rock sound was wearing itself out and subsequently was ignored. 2011 is a new year though and with that comes the band’s third record – Diamonds and Death. Released last week via Krian Music Group/Chromosome Records, the album has the similar midnight house-disco feel to it and I was especially pleased with the second track – Under the Sun. The six minute track features minimal synth, a pulsating beat and a some nice rhythmic vocals and is a great representative of the VHS or Beta sound. Check it out.
