Song Of The Day: Will Sheff – Estrangement Zone

After roughly 20 years of releasing music with his band Okkervil River, Will Sheff is set to release an album for the first time under his own name and it’s nothing special. That is, the name of the album is Nothing Special, though perhaps Sheff called it that to lower people’s expectations, or simply to send the message that, really, it’s no big deal and just another album, albeit one not under the Okkervil River banner.

That said, while it still sounds undeniably like a Will Sheff song, there is enough going on sonically in lead single “Estrangement Zone” to differentiate it as its own thing separate from Okkervil River. Check it out below.

Nothing Special is due out October 7 via ATO Records.

Song Of The Day: Mightmare – Easy

2022 looks like it’s shaping up to be a pretty busy year for Sarah Shook. Not only did they release their latest album with The Disarmers, Nightroamer, back in February of this year, but Shook is also set to release Cruel Liars, the debut album from their synthy, more indie rock-leaning project Mightmare, on October 14 via Kill Rock Stars.

“Easy” is the latest single off that upcoming album. Check it out below.

Song Of The Day: Voxtrot – Whiskey & Water

Back in the mid-2000s, Austin indie rockers Voxtrot were a much hyped band, garnering a fair bit of buzz before disbanding in 2010. While the band only released one full-length album and a handful of EPs in the time they were originally active, they did leave a stash of unreleased material behind, tucked away in the proverbial vault. And with Voxtrot now set to head out on a short reunion tour next month, there’s no better time for the band to share some new/old material via the recently released collection Cut from the Stone: Rarities & B-Sides.

“Whiskey & Water,” the album’s bouncy, Belle and Sebastian-esque opener get things off to a good start and serves as a good reminder of what made fans fall in love with their sound to begin with. Check it out below.
