SXSW Review: Hinds, Hockey Dad, March 16, Flamingo Cantina

Hockey Dad, the Australian duo of singer/guitarist Zach Stephenson and drummer Billy Fleming put on a high energy set of hyper-caffeinated jangle pop during their set at Flamingo Cantina and though they put on a good show, Spain’s Hinds would give them a run for their money in terms of energy and enthusiasm.

Hinds are basically the happiest band that’s always the most excited to be wherever they are. It’s a pretty infectious energy if the crowd’s reaction at Flamingo Cantina is any indication. When they announced that they were about to play their last song, the crowd let out a collective “Aww!” “But we have 15 more shows!” they responded. “Each one is different if you want to compare.” Yes, the band were playing their second of 17 shows for SXSW, a marathon by any standard, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they’re still at the same energy level by their final show of the week.
