SXSW Song Of The Day: Fake Fruit – Milkman

With its post-punk guitars, krautrock beat, and a vocal delivery that brings to mind Courtney Barnett, Fake Fruit have concocted a pretty potent blend in “Milkman,” the closing track off of their self-titled debut album, which came out in March of last year.

The Oakland-based four piece will be making their way to Austin in support of that album, where they’ll be playing Swan Dive on Friday, Mar 18.

SXSW Song Of The Day: Blackillac – Payoff

Today saw yet another announcement from SXSW revealing the next batch of acts set to play in Austin next month, with more than 70 new names added to the list.

Among those names is Austin hip hop duo Blackillac, made up of rappers ZEALE and Phranchyze. The duo are joined by Evan Felts & GOZÉ on their single “Payoff”, which makes excellent use of the hook from The Jeffersons theme song.

Speaking of The Jeffersons, I recently learned that Sherman Hemsley was a big prog rock fan, an unexpected but also pretty cool fact. That fact has nothing to do with Blackillac really, but hey, aren’t you better off now for knowing that? Yes, yes you are. Now go listen to some Blackillac.

With SXSW now just a few weeks away, the announcements keep on coming and today sees the announcement revealing which acts will be playing this year’s British Music Embassy, taking place this year at Cedar Street Courtyard. Alongside notables such as We Were Promised Jetpacks, Los Bitchos, Wet Leg and Yard Act, one act that jumped out to me was Hemel Hempstead-based alt-pop band Low Girl.

Fronted by multi-instrumentalist Sarah Cosgrove, Low Girl is set to release their sophomore EP in February 2022. Check out the video for lead single “So Cool” below.

Low Girl play the British Music Embassy @ Cedar Street Courtyard on Wednesday, Mar 16.

SXSW Song Of The Day: Band Of Bastards – Holy Roller

Anyone who’s ever seen …And You WIll Know Us By The Trail Of Dead live can attest to that fact that Jason Reece can get rather intense. So it’s not too much of a surprise to see that Reece’s latest project Band Of Bastards is a straight up old school hardcore band.

The band’s bio describes them as “fast, loud and righteously pissed” and all of those characteristics come through loud and clear in their video for “Holy Roller.” Check it out.
