On a wintry Sunday night, it was a low-key affair at the Drake Hotel Underground with Maria Taylor and her three-piece band, which included her brother Macey Taylor on bass. It can be weird seeing a band for the first time, especially one that has risen in popularity over the span of several albums and progressively plays larger venues every tour. I felt this way sitting in my seat way up in the balcony section at Danforth Music Hall for The Kills. It was an evening of opposites at Lee’s Palace on Wednesday night. The stage was lit up with a sparkly backdrop and flashing, twinkling lights, and the audience was generously and boisterously vocal. Cass McCombs, flanked by his three-piece band, seemed to be a man of few words, letting his well-crafted songs do the talking.   There’s something special about a hometown show.
