(Toronto) A couple of weeks ago, Brendan Canning issued a statement that a copy of his new CD, Something For All Of Us…, had been leaked (release date July 22nd). As I read this news flash, I was listening to what I believe was said leaked version. Uh oh.

The thing is that CD leaks happen all the time. But for Brendan, this time it is different because the leaked songs are unmastered, meaning they aren’t finished yet. As an artist, this is a big deal. As some of you may know, I make short films. If for some reason, an early cut of my latest flick got released or screened before it was finished, I would be pissed, mortified and heads would roll. When I went back and listened to my newly acquired Brendan Canning songs again, it all felt and sounded different knowing that the songs might not be as good as they could be. The last thing I want to do is piss off Brendan and his Broken Social Scene thugs. That night I went to bed and had a dream where Brendan showed up at my door with Kevin Drew and the two of them gave me beard-belly burns until I coughed up my entire MP3 collection.

I admit it. I didn’t find out about this on my last trip to the Chichi back alley clubs of Western France. Actually, I was reading www.thecoolhunter.net in my underwear eating an ice cream bar. Fuck it; I’m running with this anyhow.

In a nutshell, Valerie is perfect and beautiful nostalgia-emo-lectro wrapped up in the warm glow of neon scrunchies. It’s a ride in your brand new DeLorean to the mall to score some coke. It’s John Hughes dropping tracks in a shiny leather vest. It’s skipping class with the brat-pack and sneaking a quick make-out with Molly Ringwald behind the 7-11. And, oddly enough, it’s just what music needs right now.

Born in lounges of Paris, Valerie is the culmination of a number of hipster Deejays (see: skinny jeans, ironic mustaches, cartons of Marlboro Lights) and producers looking for something other than Justice inspired bangers rattling the roofs off every club in Europe. So they made this hot mess.

Then complete the 80’s revival; go rent Ferris Bueller’s Day off, The Breakfast club, and maybe even American Psycho. FYI - lots of people die in that last one.

We are probably the first and only indie-twee-britpop-rock, video game-movie-travel-food-gadget reviewing, asian centric-maritime influenced Canadian blog on the interweb.

All MP3s posted are just samples. Go buy the CD if you like it. The MP3s will be up for a duration of two weeks. If you are a representative of the band and wish to have the mp3 removed, please email us here
