Cover Song of the Day: Miles Kane – A Girl Like You (Edwyn Collins)

Toronto – You might have never actually heard the name Miles Kane before, but certainly you will know his music. With previous stints in well regarded bands The Rascals and The Last Shadow Puppets, Miles Kane has certainly made a name for himself in the past few years within the NME/Brit indie garage rock world. With that in mind, the musician from England is now embarking on a solo journey, having released his debut album Colour of the Trap a few months ago. I don’t know when or why he did a cover of Edwynn Collin’s “A Girl Like You,” but it’s a pretty good cover for a song from a man who also embarked on a solo career after being in a band. Draw all the parallels you want and check out this track.

Song/Cover of the Day: Boy & Bear – Fall At Your Feet (Crowded House Cover)

Toronto – Australians covering Australians, how novel!

Boy & Bear are a five piece band coming out of Sydney. Unlike most of their counterparts from down under, this band have forgone the typical electro-dance-pop sound settling for some kickass gang vocals, rousing choruses, and some rip roaring/foot stomping guitar work instead. It wouldn’t surprise me if they became Australia’s answer for Mumford & Sons They released an EP last year named With Emperor Antarctica but the track I want to feature is their cover of Crowded House‘s hit single “Fall at Your Feet.” Boy & Bear took this wonderful track and basically banjo-fied it. The results are pretty good, check it out.

They are playing Lollapalooza so look for some tour dates around then.

XX Song/Cover(s) of the Day: Jonquil – Infinity / Holly Miranda – Crystalized / OMD – VCR

Jonquil

Toronto – Can you believe The XX made their monumental debut over two years ago? How incredible is that? While we anxiously await their sophomore record, here are some covers to satisfy your needs.

This first one is by the band Jonquil, who I have written about quite a bit lately. It’s probably because I like them. I actually used another photo for this post at Paul’s insistence. Their version of the song Infinity adds a little more beat and a little sleaze into it. I heard them play this live in Austin and it was pretty cool.

Next up is singer songwriter Holly Miranda. This foxy lady is also in the band Jealous Girlfriends, a band I think Wade once took me to for a concert. This version of Crystalized is pretty similar to the core, maybe even a little more stripped down than you would imagine.

OMD, SXSW 2011, March 18, 2011 21.jpg

You know your music is pretty special when legendary bands such as OMD cover you. This version of VCR retains most of the XX essence, only if the song was sang by Andy McCluskey.

Alright, that’s it. Have yourselves an XXcellent weekend! (lame)
