Song of the Day: Washed Out – All Over Now + Outcast/Chillwave Theory

washed_out

Ernest Greene aka Washed Out has a new album coming out tomorrow. It’s called Paracosm. But let’s talk about his name for a second. Ernest Greene. What were his parents thinking? Maybe he was named after his grandfather or something but seriously, I am sure this was a kid who was relentlessly mocked in school.

Which brings me up to a new theory:

Social Outcast = Chillwave artist?

Let’s think about it.

1. Your name is Ernest Greene, you get made fun off or something.
2. Naturally, if you are an introvert, you retreat to the comforts of your home.
3. Play around with laptop because, why not?
4. Thinks about being a rock star, just to “show’em” and laugh in the people who made fun of you’s face.
5. Starts making music with said laptop.

I’m probably wrong on this one, I just looked up Youth Lagoon and the lead singer’s name there is Trevor Powers. With that name, no one makes fun of you.

Either way, Washed Out’s debut record Within and Without was an album I enjoyed quite a bit back in my youth and so it should be no surprise that I tackled his new record with immense vigor. The track that caught my ears the most off this new record was the last track – All Over Now. This is probably because I am a sucker for sad, cheesy, emotional eighties dream pop music. It’s a shame that the OC (which I wrote about last week) is no longer on television today, because they could probably play this song to end every episode.

Have a listen.
