What do you get when you combine a danceable beat, synthesizers and a fantastic semi-falsetto, tied together with a bow of sincerity? Skybox. I stumbled upon them last year when they opened for the indie trio Jukebox the Ghost at a Lollapalooza after party. I instantly knew I loved them when the lead singer kicked off their segment with “let’s get this crowd jumping!” – a shout out to my favorite, and only, dance move at concerts. When I bought their album Morning After Cuts post-concert, I discovered a sweet, delicate sound embroiled with just enough tension to make it interesting and topped off with the dense and yet whimsical lyrics of lead singer Tim Ellis. Set that to a percussion section that really does make you want to jump and you’ve got what makes Skybox magical. Give In A Dream a listen – if the opening beat doesn’t get you airborne I don’t know what will.
