Song of the Day: Trust / TRST / TR_ST / ? – Bulbform

Trust is Toronto based duo Robert Alfons and Maya Posteps, who judging by their press photos, are also daytime Urban Outfitter models. I have a hard time deciphering what their actual name is but I think they should make it more distinct since there is also a French and Belgium band with the same name.

Either way, the duo was signed to Arts and Craft last year and will release their debut record at some point this year. In preparation for this luminous event, the band will be playing a host of shows in early spring, including a March 3rd date at the Wrongbar, which is actually the most perfect venue you can pick for their type of music.

I’m not sure how to exactly frame Trust’s type of music, I think I would like to call it midnight electro or something. I think songs like Bulbform are best played really late in the night at a dark club. It has that type of atmosphere to it and contains (but effective) arrangements alongside cold, distant lyrics, which is all backed by a pulsating beat. Probably in the same realm of Austra’s Beat and the Pulse in terms of atmosphere. It’s pretty good, check it out.

Concert Review Review: Concert Review: Austra, December 1, Phoenix

Toronto – Anyone who know me probably knows that I am kind of obsessed with the show Community. One of Community‘s defining characteristics is that it gets quite meta at times. So in the interests of paying tribute to the show now that it’s going off the air for awhile, but mostly because this idea just snowballed out of a joke between Ricky and I, I will be doing a review of Ricky’s review of Austra’s Dec. 1 show at The Phoenix.  See? So meta. And in doing so, I hope that my review of his review will eclipse the original review in importance, much the same way that Hearts Of Darkness is way better than Apocalypse Now. And yes, that was another reference to Community. I may be a little too obsessed with that show.  But enough about me.  Here’s what I thought of what Ricky thought.

Any good review needs to have a hook, a story of some sort that will snag the reader and draw them in. Ricky accomplished this nicely with the old “discuss how the artist has undergone an image change” trick. This also works nicely as an introduction for people who don’t know who Katie Stelmanis and/or Austra is. Who are these people and why are they reading our blog?  That’s not important.  What’s important is they’re reading. Or at least looking at the pictures.

Also notable is Ricky’s trademark use of adjectives to coin a turn of phrase such as “platinum blond midnight electro goth sexpot.”  I know I’m excited when I see all those words strung together. Who wouldn’t be?  Why it’s almost as good as his recent review of Lana Del Rey where he described her persona as “mysterious DIY meets James Dean meets Vogue magazine.”  Why was that description better? Because it rhymed, people. Description is important. A good review needs to be descriptive, but not too descriptive. Much like Ricky’s concert photography, you want to leave something to the reader’s imagination. Look at that photo. Are you certain that it even is Austra? Doesn’t the mystery make it better? Of course it does.

Despite the fact that Ricky “felt rather disconnected from the show” for whatever reason, he still wrote up a solid review of the show while resisting the temptation to describe what he ate for dinner and avoiding copious spelling mistakes. This is the sign of a great reviewer. Ricky, I anxiously await your review of my review of your review. The ball is in your court, sir.

Rebranding.

It’s a helluva thing.

Katie Stelmanis has undergone one of the more radical rebrands in recent memory, changing from friendly looking girl next door Katie Stelmanis

to platinum blond midnight electro goth sexpot Katie Stelmanis

in a matter of a few years. Maybe it was an artist finally becoming comfortable with herself, maybe she accidently stumbled into one of those matrixy night clubs one night

and discovered a new use for her talented vocal pipes. Whatever it is, the change in appearance and music has completely worked out. Katie is now a part of Austra. Behind the always magnificent classically trained voice of Stelmanis and the pulsating dark electro beat provided by the rest of the band, Austra has rode a tidal wave of praise from fans and critic alike to the top of most people’s best-of charts for their debut album Feel it Break.

The momentum that Austra has gained in recent months swelled to a point that their 2011 homecoming Thursday show took place at a packed Phoenix, a far cry from the confines of the Bovine Sex Club, a place where they played a show almost exactly a year before. Having toured extensively throughout the year, the band’s live renditions of their tracks sounded crisp and Stelmanis’s voice sounded as glorious as you would imagine. The track Lose It, for me, remains one of those songs where you really really hope no drunk wannabe singer tries to sing in karaoke. It is completely unique and definitely one of the tracks of the year.

Despite the the solid set by the band, I felt rather disconnected from the show – maybe it was because I was all the way in the back of the venue, or maybe it was because of the fact that the place was rather well lit, I’m not sure. Austra seems like a type of act you see live at 2 am on a Saturday, when you stumble into some hidden alley and enter some pitch black bar that seems to be a borderline opium den. Maybe my imagination got the best of me there. Either way, Austra’s homecoming show and subsequent response was a great conclusion to what was a fantastic year for one of Canada’s brightest up and coming acts.

CMW / SXSW Preview: Austra

Toronto – Watching the The Wedge last night, I was fully introduced to Austra, a new band featuring talented singer Katie Stelmanis. The song played was called Beat & The Pulse. The song was very appropriately named, as it had a ridiculously dirty beat that instantly captured my attention. Combined with Katie’s tremendous, sometimes haunting vocal work, this is one mesmerizing tune. The video captured the essense of the song nicely, coming across as a mix of a risqué American Apparel commercial (pointed out by Melody from Singing Lamb) and a scene from those illegal night clubs in Eastern Europe. You can watch the video here.

Austra’s debut album Feel It Break comes out May 17th on Paper Bag Records in Canada and on Domino Records everywhere else.

They will be playing at the Wrongbar on March 10th for Canadian Music Fest

The event page for that show is here

Their official showcase at SXSW will be March 17th, Emo’s Main Room, at 9:00 PM, although I suspect they’ll be playing 5 or 6 other shows like every band who makes it down there.
