Song of the Day / Retro #MusicMonday: San Cisco – Rocket Ship

Does anyone remember when twitter had #musicmonday? Me neither.

We first wrote about Australian act San Cisco last year, and then they released an EP earlier for which Halley did a song of the day for. Well, we are back again! San Cisco’s EP Awkward has been steadily in my rotation this year. It’s one of those sneaky rotation events that you don’t necessarily expect but are glad it turned out that way. I’ve been trying to figure out why I like the the EP so much and I’ve finally realized it. San Cisco sounds like a smorgasbord of the bands Ive liked for the past decade. There are similarities rangin from acts like Arctic monkeys to a host of indie pop darlings that are out today.

Take the track Rocket Ship for example, it starts out with a Vampire Weekend (lets face it, we all liked them at one point or another) west undies tinge before ascending to a frenetic group chant sing along chorus that stays in your head after the track is long over. It’s a somewhat familiar sounding yet surprisingly original sound. Check it out

Song of the Day: Clock Opera – Once and For All

Clock Opera

I played this track for my friend Jess (of Roundletters / Static Zine ) and she said it was my type of song. I was like, “what’s my type of song” to which she shrugged (online). So I started thinking..what is my type of song? Well, taking a look at this single from English act Clock Opera, I guess it would feature the following

– lots of OHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHs
– glorious cathartic rousing choruses
– uplifting synth lines
– tracks with anthem potential
– great vocal work

because this track by Clock Opera features all those. I think their debut album is coming out soon, and they are also going to be at SXSW. They’re gonna be good, check this out.

Topical Song of the Day: Lamb – What Sound (is going on around the Earth?)

What is that sound
Ringing in my ears
The strangest sound

If you are to believe all the strange viral videos that have been posted with increasing frequency in the past few months. The Earth is making really weird grumbling sounds. It even made the Huffington Post, although I think Ryan Gosling drinking a sip of water makes the Huffington Post as well. Real or not, it is something that is awfully intriguing. What could it be? Here are some ideas

* Perhaps really cleverly made videos for the movie Battleship. That movie is about alien invasions or something
* Testing of secret military technologies
* Invisible planes flying overheard
* The longest and most uncoordinated youtube flash mob in history
* Something to do with global warming
* An actual alien invasion about to happen, maybe the sounds are of invisible alien things doing scouting.

Whatever it is, it certainly has gotten the attention of the internet. What do you think it is?

In the meantime, here is a song nicely titled What Sound by trip hop band Lamb. I picked the song because the opening line made sense in the context of this post, but I guess the rest of the song really doesn’t. Whatever. It’s a great track.
