SXSW Song of the Day: He’s My brother She’s My Sister – Can’t See The Stars

He’s My Brother She’s My Sister are an LA band whose bluesy-folk laid back sound makes it sound like they’re from the Midwest. If you are wondering about the band’s name, it is because the lead vocalists are a brother/sister duo. I’ve always wondered about brother/sister dynamics in the band. Are they under the ‘whatever happens on the road, stays on the road’ rule? What if little sister picks up a heroin habit and sleeps around with random AR people on the tour? Is bigger brother cool with that, or is that a phone call to mom? Similarly, what if big brother starts fancying high end prostitutes and betting on dog fights during the tour? What does little sister do?

These things can destroy bands. Luckily, He’s My Brother/She’s My Sister aren’t nearly popular enough to pick up high end prostitutes just yet, so they can concentrate on things like making good music. One of the places they’ll be at to promote their craft is Austin, Texas. They’ll be at SXSW and based on a few of these tracks, I am tempted to check them out.

Song of the Day: Chalk and Numbers – He Knew

Brooklyn duo Andrew Pierce and Sable Yong form the members of Chalk and Numbers, a group with fun loving 60s inspired girl vox sensibilities. This track and EP are about a year old but really, music like this can be from any time and it’ll still be good. Surprised these guys aren’t talked about in the same circles as Tennis or Cults, but I guess it’s all the luck of the draw. Anyways, check out the tune for some nostalgic fun.

SXSW Song of the Day: The Big Pink – Stay Gold

English duo The Big Pink released their second record Future This a few weeks ago. I wasn’t sure what to expect from the group after their hit album A Brief History of Love. Would they be a one album wonder like Glasvegas or will they build on that album into something better? Luckily for us, the new record expands on the Big Pink sound and the result is a really good album. The album has surprisingly dropped some of the shoe-gaze/wall of sound elements that made their first album popular, and replaced it with Kasabian like anthems. That works for me.

Check out the first single off the album, titled Stay Gold

#SXSW Song of the Day: Of Monsters and Men – Little Talk

Iceland might be in an unrecoverable recession, but judging by the happiness that exudes from six piece band Of Monsters and Men‘s music, you would think that it’s all parties and good times on this quaint little island.

Exhibiting upbeat folk-rock meets chaotic group chorus sensibilities, the Iceland band has literally exploded (like the volcano) in terms of positive press the past few weeks and have clearly paced themselves as one of the front runners for “most absurdly packed debut showcase” at SXSW.

It’s easy to see why they are on a collision course for success. Take the track “Little Talks.” Guy girl vocals pared with a relentlessly upbeat beat, horns, organs and a singalong backing track – it’s the exact type of song that would get both boys and girls tapping their toes. Eerily reminiscent of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zero’s track “Home” too. Not a bad thing, check them out.
