This was recently written about Ms. Sharon Jones of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings:

“She pulls her notes up at the end, like a person endorsing a check for $1 million and then throwing the pen on the floor.”

That’s pretty much all I need to know about a musician to be smitten. I mean honestly. Will that ever be written about you? When I write I check, double check, and then triple check the amount, carefully unclick the pen and put it back in my pen holder. Needless to say, that sentence will never be written about me.

Just watch her video for “Retreat!” from her latest album, “Give the People What They Want” (such a fantastic title.) It includes a strong female lead and a sparkly dress so fabulous that it can repel wolves. Doubly smitten.

Song of the Day: Highasakite – Indian Summer

highasakite

What’s the best treatment for your S.A.D.? (If you’re not in some horrible frozen tundra, and you’re in fact reading this in a city located in a warm or temperate zone, I say on behalf of everyone in Chicago a) good job and b) I hate you.) Summer pop music is of course the answer. Indian Summer from Norweigan group Highasakite has all the makings:

1) It’s got summer in the name
2) It’s got a bop-your-head-along, feel good, effortless, floating melody
3) It’ll give you the warm and fuzzies

So put on some shorts, crank up the heat to 85, put on this track, close your eyes and pretend you’re running through some meadows as dandelion fluff swirls around you in the midst of a looooooooooooooooong Indian Summer:

Song of the Day: Brightener – Bahamas

Brightener reminds me of a male version of Zooey Deschanel. “Bahamas” off his 2013 EP “Make Real Friends” is delicate/quirky in a gender reversal of the manic-pixie-dream-girl kind of way. It’s also poppy, catchy, it references REM and it’s a delight to listen to:

SXSW Song of the Day: Habibi – I Got The Moves

habibi

Habibi is an all girls band from Brooklyn that brings all sort of sunshine to this dreary winter. They just released their self titled debut off the always great Burger record. The song, like the album, has got great harmonies with a nice retro-motownesque vibe while maintaining that trademark Burger Record garage rock aesthetic. People looking to celebrate diversity will also note that band member Rahill Jamalifard sings some parts in Farsi and that the band’s name is in Arabic.

or as our web designer Vik says “they’re like pipettes meets ravonettes meets JAMC”

They are definitely worth checking out. Coming to a music festival near you.
