Song Of The Day: Chic Gamine – Search Light

If our education ministers suddenly announced that we need to infuse toddlers with Canadian values like their British counterparts just did a few days ago , I would certainly expect Vinyl Cafe to be on the shortlist. In the midst of talk about wheat in Brendan MB, Vinyl Cafe host Stuart McLean ushered Chic Gamine onto the stage with their 60s girl band charm. And now the mental imagery of moon-lit wheat fields with blues-bellowing silhouettes of scarecrows won’t clear out of my mind.

The Winnipeg group is rumored to have a new album this fall. And if this new track called Searchlight is any indication, they’ve taken a new direction. Take a listen and see for yourself. I’m just looking forward to putting some new tunes into those scarecrows!

Friday Night Dance Party: La Roux – Uptight Downtown

La Roux has taken her sweet time getting back into the game after her debut record became a hit about five years ago. That debut record, if you recall, was everywhere back in the day and Elly Jackson became a very popular person with her distinct haircut and style. Her new record, Trouble in Paradise was released a few weeks ago and it is really, really good. Basically pop perfection. Most of the tunes are catchy and just right for any summer pool party playlist. Uptight Downtown is the first track off the record. It’s catchy and upbeat, something that is reflective of the whole album. Take a listen.

Song Of The Day: Benjamin Booker – Violent Shiver

Punky, bluesy and full of raw energy, the single “Violent Shiver” from Benjamin Booker’s eponymous debut album to be dropped on August 19th is like a copious helping of the finest hot sauce in musical form – just the thing to perk you up even on the blandest of days, to make you sweat just a little, and to make tears come to your eyes.

He’s on tour right now (and for any of you Chicagoans lucky enough to have that magical and coveted Lollapalooza wristband, he’ll be taking the Grove stage at 12:50 on Saturday). Give “Violent Shiver” a listen – it’ll be the best 2 minutes and 46 seconds of your day:

Song Of The Day: Honeyblood – Super Rat

Glasgow band Honeyblood recently released their eponymous debut full length.  It’s a blast of catchy, poppy, noisy tunes from the duo of Stina Tweeddale and Shona McVicar, who refer to themselves as “Noisy Scottish Girls” on their Soundcloud page and have labelled their music as “crunch pop.”  It’s as good a term as any for what they do, with their sound evoking the sounds of the 90s and the band citing acts like Throwing Muses and The Breeders as influences.

“Super Rat” is a perfect example of their sound with Tweeddale sweetly singing lines like “I will hate you forever” and “Scumbag sleaze/Slimeball grease/You really do disgust me.”

The video sees the band partaking in such risky behaviour as blowing up cakes and eating pomegranates while wearing white. A waste of cake for sure, but it does make for a cool visual.
