Throwback Thursdays Song of the Day: Gene – For the Dead

gene

So yesterday, during an impromptu Panic Manual pub session, we were discussing the fact that I still have about eight unused vacation days to take before the end of the year. I had mentioned several places I wanted to go on vacation and then Brent or Paul suggested England again, to which I answered well maybe if some Brit bands I wanted to see reformed and put on some random shows. We then listed a few bands that I might consider going to London to see. Among the list included

  • The Auteurs/Black Box Recorder
  • Embrace
  • Gene
  • Shed Seven
  • Lush
  • Mansun

Pipe dreams. Whatever.

The whole conversation made me revisit Gene again, and it is quite astounding how great their debut single was. For The Dead was the first release by the band and it was greeted with a great reception back in the day. The track’s got some obvious Smiths influence but also features a nice flourish midway through the song that would foreshadow some of Gene’s later, more rock orientated material. This track has never really left my ipod rotation. Check it out.

You having a good day? Looking cute and feeling great? Dominating life easy-breezy-beautiful-style? Well, let me give you a Debbie Downer reality check:

Summer is almost over.

Days are getting shorter. Vacations are ending. Work and school are about to pick up. And you’re going to have to pull out your winter coat.

Now how do you feel?

If I’ve done my job correctly, you’re going to need a pick me up. Well … guess what, I have just the song for you! Take a listen to “My Doorbell” by the White Stripes. Simple, sweet, and summery, this track will have you bouncing along in your office chair/car/metro seat etc in no time. It’s a 4 minute reprieve from the impending reality of winter that lurks behind Labor Day.

Song Of The Day: King Tuff – Eyes Of The Muse

Kyle Thomas, aka King Tuff, has been releasing catchy, poppy, garage rock over the last few years and his upcoming album Black Moon Spell, out September 23 on Sub Pop records, looks to continue on in that fine tradition.

“Eyes Of The Muse,” the first song to be released off the album, seems to share a bit of musical DNA with The Edgar Winter Group’s “Free Ride,” which is a good sign for a classic rock geek such as myself. Come on and take a free ride and check it out.

Song of The Day: Emancipator – Diamonds

Emancipator (not Lincoln) has been pulling heartstrings electronically since 2009 (not 1809). Based in Portland OR, his music has been described as zen and cerebral. That may be so, but every now and then your exoskeleton becomes restrictive and your next instar is just one moult away.  The new recording “Diamonds” seems to do just that. It sees Emancipator releasing himself from the trappings of Dusk to Dawn, from the pensive Minor Cause or Natural Cause (both I recommend highly) to something entirely more upbeat and… South American. Or, maybe I’m crazy. As I’m writing this a 10 man bagpipe band just strode by in full gear… You tell me who needs some restraints.
