Song of the Day: Lord Huron – Fool for Love

Lord Huron

Nothing’s better than thinking you love something, and then realizing you love it even more than you thought.

When I first listened to Lord Huron‘s single off their upcoming album Strange Trails I was all about it. It’s like a swirling mixture of Fleet Foxes and Elvis – all cool harmonies and swaggering croon. Then upon second, third, fourth, etc. listen, I realized it’s telling a story (what can I say? I’m a sucker for a narrative piece) about a lovelorn lad off to take down his competition ‘Big Jim’. Told from the first person with a heaping dose of misplaced confidence, the song follows the story with its ultimately disastrous conclusion with an irresistible combination of compassion and sly humor – give it a listen:

Song Of The Day: Architecture In Helsinki – Escapee

Back in the summer of 2014 (oh those glorious sunny days!) the WMATA (Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority) press group put their heads together and ruminated on the quandary, “how do we take DC’s crap public transit system, which is constantly late, constantly under maintenance, and $7.50 a ride without any sort of monthly pass for daily users, and make it look super fun to ride?” It was then that Timmy the competent intern stood slowly, surveyed the group, and said, “I’ve got it.” As you can see, the result was a group of beautiful, multi-ethnic, multi-sized, multi-aged Washingtonians dancing to the silver line. Genius Timmy:

Anyways, besides the fact that WMATA has the world’s best press team but the world’s crappiest actual service, turns out it was Architecture in Helsinki’s “Escapee” that was playing behind the ad. Which seems appropriate since all anyone ever wants to do is escape from the clutches of WMATA.

Song of the Day: ELEL – 40 Watt

I was having a conversation with someone the other day about how the word “epic” has become overused, and what actually merits the description. When pushed for a definition, the closest I could come was to say that it was something that was so engrossing it created a desire to become wrapped up in it.

Which is exactly what ELEL achieves on their single “40 Watt.” From the first bars of the track incorporating a combination of synth that almost sounds like steel drums, hand claps and a badass slow drumbeat, I get totally sucked into this song every time. The second the distorted and electric vocals hit with the first “40 Waaaaatt Liiiiiiiightbuuuuuuuulb” I’m hooked and engrossed. The song is a shimmery, hazy, delicate thing of beauty – give it a listen:

Song Of The Day: John Carpenter – Night

It’s getting dark outside. It’s late at night, you’re all alone, and you can’t shake the feeling that something bad is coming down the pipeline. You wonder if maybe it’s the ominous synthesizer music that brings on this feeling and then it hits you – you are a character in a John Carpenter film!

At least that’s the feeling I get while listening to “Night,” a track off of Carpenter’s upcoming debut album of non-soundtracks recordings, Lost Themes (out February 3 on Sacred Bones records). While it’s not actually the theme to one of his films, it’s certainly of a piece with the scores Carpenter penned for such classics as Halloween, Prince Of Darkness or They Live! Give it a listen and fill your head with imaginary scenes from films Carpenter never actually made.

And as a bonus, enjoy the video for “Big Trouble in Little China” from Carpenter’s cheese-tastic old band The Coup de Villes, also featuring Nick Castle (who played Michael Myers in the first Halloween) and Tommy Lee Wallace, the writer and director of Halloween III: Season Of The Witch, which, let’s face it, was the best of the Halloween movies.
