Throwback Thursdays Song of the Day: Gene – For the Dead

gene

So yesterday, during an impromptu Panic Manual pub session, we were discussing the fact that I still have about eight unused vacation days to take before the end of the year. I had mentioned several places I wanted to go on vacation and then Brent or Paul suggested England again, to which I answered well maybe if some Brit bands I wanted to see reformed and put on some random shows. We then listed a few bands that I might consider going to London to see. Among the list included

  • The Auteurs/Black Box Recorder
  • Embrace
  • Gene
  • Shed Seven
  • Lush
  • Mansun

Pipe dreams. Whatever.

The whole conversation made me revisit Gene again, and it is quite astounding how great their debut single was. For The Dead was the first release by the band and it was greeted with a great reception back in the day. The track’s got some obvious Smiths influence but also features a nice flourish midway through the song that would foreshadow some of Gene’s later, more rock orientated material. This track has never really left my ipod rotation. Check it out.
