RT Contest: Win tickets to see The Slackers, Oct 28, Opera House

When I first moved to Toronto for school, I didn’t know much about live music. Like many teenagers, I had experienced a few larger open air concerts. You know, the ones where you get to buy bottles of water or soda for $5 and listen to bands that were popular on the radio at the time.

Everything changed when I moved to the big city. A guy in my residence was a huge ska fan and started bringing us out to live shows. In tiny intimate clubs dotted around the city, we’d rock out to the likes of The Planet Smashers and The Kingpins. Having a night of partying that centred around live music was a revelation to me. It was infinitely more enjoyable than a typical night of pubs and clubs.

One of my favourite bands from this era is The Slackers, a NY-based outfit with some classic tunes that are one part ska and one part grit. They’re playing Toronto’s Opera House next Friday October 28 and courtesy of Collective Concerts, we’re giving away a few pairs of tickets.
