Great Music Moments in Movies: Badly Drawn Boy, About A Boy

These days, its fairly common when an artist scores an entire film’s soundtrack. We’ve seen the likes of Nick Cave, Johnny Greenwood, Daft Punk and Chemical Brothers do it in recent years. However, ten years ago, that was not the case so it was a bit of a surprised when Badly Drawn Boy was asked to score the entire film for the film adaptation of Nick Hornby’s novel About A Boy. At that time, Badly Drawn Boy was at the height of his popularity, buoyed by an exceptional debut album (The Hour of Bewilderbeast) that was accompanied by some creative music videos.

While there aren’t any specific moments I’d like to wrote about, the matchup itself was just about perfect. Damien Gough’s playful and uplifting notes was a perfect compliment for the films innocent and friendly tone. Two of the songs that were features in the film – Silent Sigh and Something to Talk About would turn into hits and perhaps, just perhaps, it helped nudge the door a little more open for indie artists to have their work features on films. Can’t believe the kid in that movie was Beast in the most recent X-men film.
