Epic Preview Time: Out of the Box Festival

The set times for the Out of the Box Festival were announced today, which probably means we should preview the festival. I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t really know a whole lot about this festival as it seems to happen whenever I’m out of town.

Weekend Passes Available at Rotate This and Soundscapes

Here’s the set times. I’m not going to bother reformatting it into something more HTML friendly because I am currently on a mac typing this and it’s like driving an automatic after years of driving stick. It’s weird.

ORIGAMI OF THE GIANTS as presented by Jessica Stuart-
A room celebrating the Art of Origami by presenting Origami in Life Sized Form!!

9:30 MJ Cyr
10:20 Polynesian Bride
11:10 The Rest
12:00 Olenka and the autumn lovers
12:50 Parks and Rec

Who doesn’t like Origami? Folding paper into various animals is fun for one and all, so I am betting the arts exhibit from Jessica Stuart will be a big hit. Speaking of origami, check out this chameleon I folded in a meeting last week:

Who says technical people can’t be artistic?

The highlight of this showcase for me would be Olenka and the Autumn Lovers. Olenka has been on the Toronto scene for years now and her lovely voice has never failed to please the ears.

3 DIMENSIONS OF ROCK AND ROLL PART 1 – a Co-Presentation with Green Shades Productions

How many people have been to a 3D Rock Concert?? Well you will here. Featuring 3D art and imagery projected on the giant cinema screen behind the bands. And yes, you will get glasses.

9:30 The Cheap Speakers
10:20 Davey Parker Radio Sound
11:10 The Hoa Hoas
12:00 Rival Boys
12:50 Planet Creature

I’m not sure what a 3d concert entails, but expect a lot of projectiles thrown towards the crowd. I hope it’s not vomit.

3 DIMENSIONS OF ROCK AND ROLL PART 2 – A continuation of Friday nights theme, with more 3D imagery to awe and inspire.

9:30 Foxes In Fiction
10:20 Human Bodies
11:10 Trap Tiger
12:00 Heartbeat Hotel
12:50 Papermaps

Another 3d showcase will feature two local favorites. Foxes in Fiction and his rabid fan base will open the night up with his blend of DIY low fi indie music while our friends Papermaps will be closing the set with atmospheric pop tunes. Should be a good set. It’s also close to Chinatown so you can go to Train for pho or Gold Stone for some good beef brisket noodles afterwards. That is usually the clincher for me.

PLANET EARTH- An Art Installation celebrating our home. Earth.

9:10 Loom
9:55 The Cautioneers
10:45 Lake Forest
11:35 The Jessica Stuart Few
12:25 Sky of Sound
1:15 Entire Cities

We all live here on Earth, so celebrating it seems like a great idea. Entire Cities are an entirely pleasant band I’ve had the pleasure of seeing once or twice. The lead singer has a crazy mustache that threatens to evolve into some sort of caterpillar at any moment, so catch him before that happens.

SPACE PROM as presented by David Kleiser –

“Congratulations. You have all graduated from the Intergalactic School of Debauchery. Before you head out into the universe, you might want to say one last goodbye to the best years of your life. And do so in your best space attire.”

9:30 Blood Rexdale
10:20 Topanga
11:10 The Ruby Spirit
12:00 The Bulletproof Tiger
12:50 Opopo

A space prom! Who hasn’t wanted to attend an intergalactic dance party? This night will be full of fun fun fun. We’ve written about our fondness for Topanga before and they will no doubt get the party started with their upbeat indie pop. The Ruby Spirit are an excitable band seemingly primed for big things with their high attitude rock so you will need to see them sooner than later. Opopo will finish off the night with what will surely be an epic dance party.
