Toronto – “My little brother is 29 now, and he’s not out of control. He’s a teacher and about to get married” Eddie Argos tells us during a mid song break of the Art Brut hit My Little Brother
“My parents aren’t really worried about him anymore” he elaborates “I’ll tell you how to worry your parents – start a band, maybe seven or eight years ago, get somewhat popular, plateau early and then linger around for a few years. You’re still playing the same clubs, but maybe they aren’t as full as before. You are now 31, and your parents are now asking you why are you still in that band”
It’s these kind of self aware statements that make Art Brut one of the most honest and endearing bands I’ve ever seen. Playing the headlining set at the Mod Club showcase on Friday night, Art Brut put on the best NXNE show I’ve seen this year. Despite being in town to promote their new album Brilliant! Tragic!, Art Brut delivered immeasurable happiness to the crowd by sticking to their guns and playing mostly hit tracks from the first two album.
The obvious highlight was the track Modern Art in which Eddie Argos wandered into the crowd, telling a ten-fifteen minute story about going to the Van Gogh museum and getting caught touching a painting. Somehow during the course of this story, Eddie got the crowd on the Mod Club floor to all join him on his knees for a few minutes before the entire place exploded yelling “Modern Art makes me, want to rock out!” Showmanship at it’s best. Eddie would later tell the crowd that he now has to cut five songs from the set because of the story, and then subsequently started taking song requests. Amazing.
Art Brut will make you believe in rock ‘n’ roll. See them live.
