NXNE Concert Review: Forest City Lovers, June 16, Music Gallery

Toronto – Playing against the lovely Church backdrop that is the Music Gallery, Toronto based folk band Forest City Lovers provided a lush gentle introduction to my night at North By Northeast. Starting off with a lovely solo piano number by Kat Burns, her lovely voice permeated the entire building with a overwhelming dose of calm, only slightly interrupted by the idiot photographer who put his camera too close to the mic which caused the clicking of his camera to become an inadvertent drum beat. The rest of the group soon joined the act and the band probably played tracks off their 2010 release Carriage. I was impressed with Mika Posen’s violin work, which seemed to be perfectly suited for such a serene environment and the group did a lovely job constructing a nice mellow vibe for their half hour set. My only issue with the set was that it was maybe a little too quiet and a little too mellow. The band was fairly content to stand still and play their music, which is pretty fitting given the material but it would have been nice to perhaps add a little more oomph to the show. I’m not sure how that would work though. Perhaps Forest City Lover’s lullaby soundscape is more suited as a last act of the night, one that would be a nice cool down from all the action, rather than an act that is suppose to provide a dose of energy for the night ahead.

i loved their set last night! they usually are totally more energietic with a drummer etc but i thought they did a great job of making the show special for the church. you should see them a fw more times :)
