Toronto – As you continue to prepare for NXNE next week, here is the second part in our series for places to eat and then shows to see.
June 16, 2011 + Poutini + Wrongbar
There maybe better food options when around the Wrongbar, but frankly, I don’t hang around that area much after dark, especially when you have maniacs running around beating up senior citizens every once in a while. I myself am 30, so I’m almost halfway there, which means I might get half a beating. Anyways, the Wrongbar is home to a very eclectic roster of Canadian acts tonight and it’s definitely going to be packed and full of people tweeting about how band x is “killing it”. However, that should not dissuade you from making the trek down to this little dance hall. But first, what do you eat?
Poutini
There maybe better poutine joints out there, and the whole weighing of cheese curds on a scale thing might be off-putting, but the fact remains that if you are going to settle into a venue for a lengthy period of time, there isn’t a more suitable way to fill your stomach then a boat load of carbs. Poutini opened to 2009 along with a host of other similarly themed restaurants and has since seen it’s popularity sky rise primarily out of people’s love for the potato-cheese-gravy combination. I like them because they actually use cheese curds and it’s just kinda tasty. After loading up on poutine, you should head down to Wrongbar where a host of good acts await your precious arrival.
If you are a punctual person, make sure you arrive at the Wrongbar for 9:00 pm to catch Jennifer Castle. A frequent member on the Toronto music scene, Jennifer has lent her exquisite voice to The Constantines’ Kensington Heights and F*cked Up’s David Comes to Life albums so her voice might be instantaneous familiar to you. Her take on folk music will surely lull you into a false sense of complacency and relaxation that will surely end the second Allie Hughes takes the stage at 11 pm. Known for shows involving proms, marriages and other sorts of theatrics, this creative tour de force will surely put on an show that’ll be a feast both on both the audio and visual fronts. After her showcase, the night will probably take a harder turn as Toronto hard rock band Anagram and the omnipresent F*cked Up take the stage at 12 and 1am. Already riding a massive tsunami of momentum following their exhausting but rewarding epic David Comes to Life , Damian Abraham and company will definitely take the Wrongbar stage by storm and I’m pretty sure a Vancouver-sque riot will happen near the front. Wear some mouthguards if you don’t want to get your teeth kicked in. It’ll be awesome for sure.
