Shows This Week – April 4th to April 10th

Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010

Toronto – This post is one day late, so let’s get right to it. Plenty of good choices this week for you to further impair your hearing ability.

Cut Copy / Holy Ghost

Sound Academy, April 7th

Australia’s Cut Copy has been making the rounds in North America lately touring their latest album Zonoscope. The album has already produced one stunning single – Take Me Over and new single Need You Now will further cement this synthpop band as one of the best electro dance bands out there. I was absolutely in love with their last album In Ghost Colours and the new album is slowly growing on me. They are playing the dreaded Sound Academy on Thursday. Opening for them is New York disco act Holy Ghost! who has their own very stellar album to promote. Their debut self titled album is out on April 12th. Basically, if you can set aside the fact that you are going to the Sound Academy, you will find yourself at a very good show with lots of dancing.

PS I Love You / Matters

Garrison, April 7th

Kingston’s PS I Love You will once again grace the Toronto stage on Thursday to lay down his grunge era inspired tunes from his debut album Meet Me At The Muster Station. However, this night will probably be known as the Toronto debut of the band Matters, a band formerly known as D’Urbervilles. I think it was either last week or two weeks ago, but the D’Urbervilles announced they would be breaking up or something and then a few days latter reemerged as Matters, a band with seemingly black and white aesthetics. As you may know by now, Matters is fronted by John O’Regan, him of Diamond Rings fame. While the book is still out on how much different the new band sounds, from a SEO perspective, he basically took a very easy to search for band to one that is impossible.

Nat Baldwin

April 6, Double Double Land

I don’t know why the hell on Earth Dirty Projector’s Nat Baldwin would ever want to tour without those pretty ladies in the Dirty Projectors, but he is doing it now. With solo record in hand, Nat will be in town performing tracks off his forthcoming debut album People Changes at some new place called Double Double Land. Sounds like something that lame 905ers would call Tim Hortons out of irony. Regardless, it’s always interesting to see members of the band do solo projects, so feel free to drop by on Wednesday.

Sebadoh

April 6th, Lee’s Palace

God of 90′s college grunge Lou Barlow is back with original Sebadoh line-up. Sort of. Jason Lowenstein and Gaffney’s replacement Bob D’Amico are coming to Lee’s Palace tomorrow night to perform Bakesale, their seminal 1994 release and one of the best albums of the 90′s. It’s sold out, but there may be scalpers out front.

Acid Mothers Temple/Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers

El Mo, April 8th

Shilpa Ray & Her Happy Hookers has got to be one of the best band names I’ve come across. This New York (where else, seriously) take no prisoners rock band will be opening for Japanese rockers Acid Mothers Temple in what will surely be a crazy rock show. Check out this 80s inspired horror themed music video for the single Heaven in Stereo, off their album Teenage and Torture here:

I kinda expected Meat Loaf to show up halfway through that video, for some reason.
