Shows This Week: Feb 7th to Feb 13th

Toronto – In life, there are ups and there are downs. The Steelers just lost the Superbowl, so this is a down. However, my commitment in this blog has made me write this weekly lineup tonight. Maybe it’s therapeutic, I don’t know. The White Stripes broke up last week, no reaction. Tonight’s lost hit me like a bag of bricks.

On the good side, we were nominated for best music site in Canada by the awesome CBC Radio 3 (despite them auto playing music when I go to the site, which annoys me terribly). Feel free to vote for us, the link is on the thing on the right hand side.

Like someone once said, despite the Steelers lost, the show(s) must go on.

The Radio Dept

February 6th, Lee’s Palace

Easily the show of the week, maybe the show of the month. Legendary Swedish band The Radio Dept is in town on Monday and this show will be great. Great I tell ya. They’ll probably be playing a greatest hits set as they just released that compilation, entitled ssive Aggressive: Singles 2002-2010. I wrote an article about them last week, so check it out here.

Allie Hughes

Drake Hotel, Feb 9

Allie Hughes first caught our eyes last August with her colorful and original take on quirky pop music. She is back to headline a show on Wednesday with Henri Faberge & the Adorables, and special guests Dwayne Gretzky (cover band made up from the dudes of the Arkells and Sweet Thing). This promises to be somewhat a spectacle, with an invitation like this:

I would like to request the honour of your presence at the marriage of Ms. Alexandra Ashley Hughes to Mr. Chad Leonardo Von Galen II on Wednesday, the Ninth of February Two Thousand Eleven at nine o’clock in the Underground of the Drake Hotel in the cool area of Toronto. Polygamist Henri Faberge will be playing with his Adorables Wives and cover band Dwayne Gretzky will be doing playing a celebratory set afterwards.

Cordially,

God

A pretty good bet for an otherwise drab Wednesday night.

The Twelves

Wrongbar, Feb 12

One of my favorite remixers, the Brazillians seem to come here every three months but who cares? They put down some of the sickest mixes you’ll witness and their takes on some really popular songs will make you think twice when you think a song isn’t dance-able.

Maceo Parker

Feb 10, Queen Elizabeth Theatre

Even as an indie blogger, we sometimes try to look into different types of music, and by we, I really mean Mark and Brian. However, one of these people we like is legendary funk jazz man Maceo Parker. Want proof? Both times we have seen the man live, we have come away severely impressed. How could we not? This was a man who was in James Brown’s band in the 60s and has played aside other various soul funk legends since. He’ll be at the Queen Elizabeth Theatre on Thursday.

These are the shows that interest this week. Have fun.
