Toronto – Welcome to a new article series, one which I will write about feverishly over the next week or two and then forget about shortly after. This one will celebrate the use of music, in television or movies. Simple enough. Let’s start.
Donnie Darko was one of those movies that came out early last decade and everyone just raved about it. Can you believe this movie came out ten years ago!?!? I’m still not sure why I liked this movie so much, considering all the technical flaws that it had when it comes to time travel. Still, this movie had an amazing soundtrack, and it began with the opening scene, one of a still young Jake Gyllenhaal biking down a mountain to Echo and the Bunnymen‘s The Killing Moon
Something about the way the melancholy music matching up to Donnie Darko’s solo bike ride seem to fit really nicely. Surprisingly, the same song was used for another purpose in the highly underrated movie The Girl Next Door. Sad to say that movie was Elisha Cuthbert’s one great moment in Hollywood besides hiding from a cougar (a real one, not Kim Cathrall) in 24.
Back to Donnie Darko, it was that first moment that had me thinking “hmm, this movie could be pretty good” and for most part, the movie was pretty good. It also had many more good music/movie moments featuring Tears for Fears and Joy Division. Might have been one of those movies where the music surpass the actual film, but no one will ever know I guess.
Speaking of Echo and the Bunnymen, they are touring North America once again. This time, they will be playing their albums Crocodiles & Heaven Up Here.
