Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival PREVIEW: HAIRCUT

It’s that time of year again when the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival takes over the city. The festival, in its’ 6th year, is happening next week from November 2nd to 7th. To celebrate the hilarity and inevitable drunkenness, I will be previewing some troupes that I think are worth checking out.

First up is the sketch duo of Patrick Smith and Allie Price otherwise known as Haircut. They host their own show at Bread & Circus the second Friday of every month at 10:PM and won the Audience Choice Award at the Sketch Fest in 2009. They got my attention with their music video, Suburbanite, which you can check out below. I also met Patrick at a party this summer, and he didn’t seem like a douche bag.

Q. What can audiences expect at a Haircut show?
A. Two tall people – 100%!! At Sketch Fest, you can expect to see some fresh material that we are really excited about. We always try our hardest to keep things high energy with a strong point of view. There will likely be some inappropriate touching as well…. intrigued?? We love to get musical, so you can typically expect a song of some sort as well… usually a bad-mamma-jamma rap of some kind.

Q. How was your experience performing at Just For Laughs? Has anything come from it yet?
A. Performing at the Toronto Just for Laughs Festival this year was absolutely incredible. We shared our night with TJ Miller, and his sketch troupe Heavyweight (Chicago). Those guys were wicked funny. It was a blast partying it up with comedians from all over the world who we respect and inspire us. The talent in the room at the after parties was pretty awesome. It was a real honour, for sure. Has anything come of it yet? Oh, yeah! We’ve probably become the wealthiest comedians on our block as a result. Lorne Michaels called us and left a message for us to come play his Saturday show, but we’ve just been soo swamped, ya know!?

Q. Your video for Sububranite is pretty cool. How did it come about?
A. Thanks, man! Yeah, Suburbanite was a real treat to shoot. When we wrote the song we were really excited about it, but it just seemed like it was one of those things that would be a lot better with visuals as opposed to performed on stage. It so happened that this year I joined the production company, 83 Pictures, and once we story-boarded a location/action script for the shoot and got those talented dudes involved (Brett Blackwell, Matt Kloske, Ryan MacDonald, Craig Shouldice) the project got put in some pretty great hands.
