Toronto – Normally, we don’t really do PSAs. However, since one of our own blog members is a budding film maker and Hot Docs is one of my favorite Toronto events of the year, I would like to take a few minutes to inform you that the application deadline for the Don Haig Award is fast approaching (January 29th). What is it, you ask? well, I took this from the hot docs site:

documentary’s Don Haig Award is presented annually to an emerging Canadian documentary filmmaker. The winner will receive a $20,000 cash prize generously sponsored by documentary.

“The Award was founded in 2002 by a group of very dedicated colleagues and friends in the film industry in order to perpetuate Don’s legacy in assisting emerging independent filmmakers,” says Bill Schultz, honourary chair of the Award Steering Committee and Don Haig’s life partner. “Don’s first love has always been documentary, and he dedicated his life to it.”

Previous winners include the chinaman who made Up the Yangtze, a documentary that is on my top 10 favorite documentary list.

So, Canadian filmmakers, get on it! 20K baby! that’s almost a Honda Civic
