December, January and February. Three months where I can reflect on music I missed out on during the past year. Can’t wait. In doing some 2009 research, here are five Canadian bands that I have discovered in the past few months that I am going to keep an eye out for in 2010. Enjoy:
Pick A Piper – A collective of sound artists featuring Brad Weber of Caribou, Angus Fraser of Tenth of May, Dan Roberts ex-Winter Equinox and Clint Scrivener. If you check them out live, they will give you a sweaty, energetic shows, where you may find yourself part of the band by the end of it all. Check out their tribal, danc-ish track Rooms below. It is catchy.
Monogrenade – This Montreal band just signed to Paper Bag this past summer. If they come to your town, have a look out, but don’t count it, especially if you live outside of Quebec. What is the deal with awesome Quebec bands not touring outside of Quebec? Have you ever heard of Les Trois Accords? Didn’t think so. Monogrenade are promoting Ce Soir as a single, but their song Axis Mundi is just as rocking, if not better.
Hannah Georgas – Hannah isn’t exactly new, but I am really digging her lateley. From Vancouver, Hannah sings beautiful, haunting, hopeful, layered songs. File Hannah under fellow Canucks Jenn, Neko, and Basia. Check out You’ve Got A Place Called Home
Bahamas – CBC3 has a big stiffy for Bahamas. By the time NXNE rolls around, he will probably be headlining their must see show at the Horseshoe on the Saturday night of the festival. He is charming. He will also make the 2010 Polaris Long List, but not the Short List.
Kalle Mattson – These four guys currently live in Sault Ste. Marie/Ottawa. I predict that they will move to Toronto this year and become best friends with The Balconies and bring Beavertails to the downtown core. They will also gig around town. I am in love with their song Q and You which I hope you enjoy too.
