New Exc!tement

Every year the Toronto Sketch Comedy Festival opens its arms to our friends to the south and invites some kids from the New York sketch scene up to Toronto. The contingent of New York sketch troups has always had a solid presence at the festival. Past notables include Elephant Larry, Freedom, FUCT and Free Love Forum. This year is no different with Free Love Forum back again along with BOF, Kanellis & Armstrong and New Exc!tement making the trip north. I sent New Exc!tement some questions and they answered them.

How would you describe a NEW EXC!TEMENT show to somebody that doesn’t get out to see a lot of sketch comedy?
I would say a “New Exc!tement” show is super positive, physical, joyful, and totally hilarious… oh and they are pretty messy too. We really love to celebrate things that make us all human: odd tendencies, huge emotion, mistakes and so on. We have never been interested in the kind of comedy that is cynical or at the cost of other peoples integrity. We begin our shows by saying “hello” to the audience, welcoming them, and my feeling is that this greeting attempts to invite everyone in the audience to share this time with us, and be genuinely happy for thirty minutes… ideally laugh their heads off.

How did New Exc!tement get its name?
One morning in New Rochelle, New York, we were driving to film a video at a college which, at the time, employed Chris Manley. We passed a tall McDonald’s sign said “New excitement! Breakfast burritos are here!” And that’s when we all knew what we were to be named. Then Matt Hobby got a good idea to put an exclamation point where the ‘i’ would go.

What rumors have you heard about Canada or Toronto that you would like to either confirm or deny when you head up here for the Toronto Sketch Festival?
I heard that Toronto and Canada in general was cold. I’d like that rumor to be denied when I arrive there. I have sensitive teeth. I have also heard that people from Canada are really polite. So, I’d like that to be proven correct. As long as that’s OK with you.

When I think of New York, I think of Brooklyn. When I think of Brooklyn I think of Bishop Allan, Dirty Projectors, Matt & Kim, Grizzly Bear and the Pains Of Being Pure At Heart. What new bands can you tell us about that we might not have heard about yet here in Canada?
Bands we’re currently loving that you may or may not know: Yeasayer, “Ambling Alp” (from Brooklyn); Richard Swift, “The Atlantic Ocean” (from Brooklyn); Maps & Atlases, “You and Me and the Mountain” (from Chicago); and Nurses, “Apple’s Acre” (from Portland).
