Pop Montreal begins this week and I will be heading to Montreal, for a couple of days at least. As for shows I am going to see, I have no idea. Typically my festival strategy is to pick a venue where one or two good acts are playing, and stay there for the night. However, the schedule on the Pop Montreal website is organized by TIME and not by VENUE, which means my methodology is screwed. Since I am not familiar with Montreal and the different clubs, I am counting on there being a good venue map included in my press package in order to determine my schedule. So far, my highlight list of musical acts to catch include:

Silly Kissers
Thursday, October 1, 8-9, Preloved, 4832 St-Laurent
All Girl Summer Fun Band meets Chromeo…kind of. I want to see these guys the most.

Gregory Pepper And His Problems
Friday, October 2nd, 1-2AM, Divan Orange 4234 St-Laurent
I like Greg’s problems. He plays the piano and is querky.

Bahamas
Wednesday, September 30th, 9-10, Exclaim! Venue: Ukrainian Federation 5213 Hutchison
Bahamas is Afie Jurvanen. He’s played with Feist, PasoMino, The Stills, Howie Beck, Amy Millan, Jason Collett, Hayden, and more. A live show is likely to be a solo affair, though lately a host of Toronto time keepers have been sitting behind the drum kit.

Micachu & The Shapes
Thursday, October 1st, 10:30-11:30, Dose.ca Venue: Cabaret Juste Pour Rire 2111 St-Laurent
They have played a copule of well attended shows in Toronto this past year, but I haven’t caught them yet

Cinnamon Band
Wednesday, September 30th, 9:30-10:30, Il Motore 179 Jean-Talon O
Yo, these dudes are from Philly

FILM POP
IT MIGHT GET LOUD (2009, dir: Davis Guggenheim)
This film chronicles Jack White, The Edge, and Jimmy Page, and their relationships with the electric guitar, culminating in a group performance by these cross-genre virtuosos. Brought to you by Davis Guggenheim, the man behind An Inconvenient Truth.
Cinema du Parc, 30 Sept – 19h00

CHOOSE YOUR OWN ADVENTURE INSTALLATION!
Film Pop presents an installation featuring music videos and local shorts that you can play at will. The headphone cords will be long enough for two person dance parties! Videos will include Local Montrealer Andrew Lima’s ‘Jordan and Bear’ about a man and his best friend (a giant black bear) and their unlawful attempts to fulfill Jordan’s dream of going to the Dominican Republic, and Torontonian Wade Vroom’s ‘Novels,’ which takes you inside a 24 hour recording session between five of Canada’s top young musicians, including Luke Lalonde of The Born Ruffians.
La Place Ubisoft: L’Espace Reunion, 30 Sept – 4 Oct

PUCES POP
Puces POP is Montreal’s largest do-it-yourself festival where people can come and celebrate all types of independent creation! Proudly going into its fourth year, Puces POP takes place during the last two days of the POP Montreal, and features a marketplace where over one hundred local and international artists, crafters, and indie record labels come to sell their wares. In addition, Puces POP hosts several other events such as a business seminar for artists and craftspeople, a fashion show, an art exhibition, and even a record sale and gear swap!

That is all for now. I gotta go pack.
