The Panic Manual

Toronto – Back in the day when I used to watch Muchmusic and the Brit Awards, I was completely stumped when Finley Quaye won the 1998 best male award. I was asking myself – “Who the hell is this guy?” and considered ordering his cd through Columbia House or BMG. Remember those? I still remember getting a few friends to join those things so I get 4 free cds (I offered them 1 of my 4 exchange). Then I discovered that if I sent a complaint about broken cd cases, they would give you 2 free cds as well.. Anyways, I got a lot of free cds from them back in the day. Back to Finley Quaye, so yeah, after that initial award, there was a lot of press about him, but I never managed to listen to a song of his, so he escaped my thoughts…

Until the OC, when a collaboration between Finley Quaye, Beth Orton and William Orbit yielded a nice little song named “Dice”, which was prominently featured in one of the crucial scenes of the show. I don’t remember what it was, but I would guess it was either Ryan and Marissa breaking up, or getting back together. Those were the only two things that ever happened on the show I think.

Say what you will about that show, but it had some great songs on it. Songs by Spoon, The Doves, Turin Brakes, Stars, Super Furry Animals and Sufjan were featured. They played my favorite Interpol song “The Specialist” and that’s just some b-side. Also, Olivia Wilde played a lesbian on it. Yup.

Back to the song, I like it, it’s pretty good and definitely worth checking out.
