Toronto – What the hell happened to the Pipettes? A few years ago, everyone couldn’t get enough of them, and now? Nothing. Anyways, for those of you looking to fill that gap of retro 60-esque pop sound, then you need to look no further then V.V. Brown. Also known as Vanessa Brown, the London based singer’s debut album “Travelling Like the Light” was released in July and well, it’s a damn fun album. Sounding like 60s inspired doo-wop pop mixed with andre 3000 “hey ya” production, the album definitely takes you back to what I can only assume was carefree days of diners, milkshakes and mad men. Now don’t let this fool you into thinking it’s purely a oldies tribute album, V.V. Brown incorporates some modern electro elements (and video game sounds) into most songs, giving it a rather fresh feeling. Upbeat numbers such as “Leave” and “Crying Blood” are mixed in with slower tracks such as “Back In Time”. Whatever the tempo is, one thing remains constant – every single song is irresistibly catchy, making this a helluva album to listen to in the summer. It’s pure fun pop bliss.
