vfest

Toronto – Well, there’s no Blur sadly. However, the V-Fest lineup has been released. Unlike the previous years, this years V-Fest will take place in some random country place called “Burl Creek’s Park” near Barrie. That’s a hella long commute my friend. You can go here for the lineup. Here are some notables:

Day 1

Ben Harper is headlining…what? I don’t know one song by this guy. Maybe its for VH1 people? I don’t know

Pixies, Franz Ferdinand, Grizzly Bear and Mates of State are good draws.

Paolo Nutini is on the list too, I don’t know who he is but he’s really popular

It’s nice to see Sloan play somewhere outside of a 5 minute drive of where they live too.

Day 2

NIN plays what they say is one of their last live shows or something, I wonder how the Goths will deal with the Gays who will be attending Pet Shop Boys. Then you wonder how the Gays will deal with the Christians that are there to watch the Cold War Kids. Of course the skaters who will be watching NERD will be too drugged up to care. Interesting collective of bands I say. People our age can also reminisce about their high school days as Our Lady Peace rounds out the main part of the bill.

All in all it looks like a decent bill, of course, given that it’s V-Fest, it’ll probably change 18 times by the time the actual festival goes around. One of the biggest draws is that given this economy, it’s nice to see the V-Fest peeps lower the prices to a rather nifty $99. This is a far cry less then what they were charging last year. Of course, if you are going for two nights, the question becomes whether or not you camp or drive back home or what.

Bland, but I guess the idea of V-Fest is to appease those in the Mix 99.9 / (and as you mentioned) VH1 set.

Would I have wanted to see NIN, Tennant & Lowe, and the Pixies in their prime? Heck yes. Today? That’s iffy. I hope more aging groups take a cue from Dinosaur Jr. and blow everyone out the water with a sparkling new release.

Speaking of which, who wants to come to Dinosaur Jr. with me?

If the Pixies did a solo show in the area, I might go to that. But man, this lineup does not interest me one bit…

Are you suggesting that NIN is a goth band? I know Trent had Bauhaus open a couple of tours ago but not so much. And really, you can’t name one Ben Harper song? I don’t know, Ricky. Might be time to bring your head up out of the indie waters for a half hour or so.

Said with love, of course.

I can’t name a Ben Harper tune either. The only thing I know about him is that he snagged Laura Dern.

Maybe we’re in that South Park episode, Prehistoric Ice Man. V-Fest organizers have been frozen since the mid-90’s and want to create a cocoon of dial-up internet, Hootie and the Blowfish + Eddie Bauer.

OK, maybe not, but I still don’t know any of his music.

Support for the “frozen since the mid-90’s” theory: V-fest in BC is headlined by The Roots, OLP, Ben Harper and Sonic Youth. In Alberta the Saturday headliner is Pearl Jam. V-fest Montreal had David Usher, Live, and New Kids on the Block, all on the same day, and V-fest Halifax was headlined by The Offspring. Hmm.

Hillside will be WAY better. I gots me a media pass. Yessssss.

WTF….in their prime??? have you EVER seen these bands live?

the pixies are better live now then they were 20 years ago.

nin are also better live now then they were 20 years ago. this will be my 4th nin show in the past year…they are the main draw for me.

pet shop boys weren’t fantastic live, but they were fun and they have a new record that’s doing quite well.

looking forward to franz and datarock but not much onthe bill interests me. why the hell is harper headlining?
