Toronto – It’s been awhile since I’ve written about my other love(s) – food & Hong Kong. Recently purchases of Fruitips in Chinatown have me inspired to assemble a list of foods I had whilst growing up in Hong Kong (aka the best city on Earth).

Here we gooooooooooooo

yakult-728696

Yakult – My absolute favorite drink growing up. I still buy a dozen of these when I go visit HK every so often. They have them here, but its not the same. What is it? I let wikipedia do the talking: “is a Japanese probiotic milk-like product made by fermenting a mixture of skimmed milk with a special strain of the bacteria Lactobacillus casei Shirota.” Whatever that is, it’s good.

fruitip

Fruitip – Black Current Version ONLY – Anyone who eats another version of Fruitip is silly. Its a pastille or something, but hella good candy. It’s really chewy. Hongers love this candy.

haw-flakes

Haw Flakes – Hell I didn’t even know what this was made of until today. Its a type of candy made from Hawthorn, which is a fruit of some kind. According to wikipedia, it is “formed into discs one millimeter thick, packaged in rolls of twenty-two discs, and sold in packs of ten rolls.” I used to like to eat 3 or 4 of them at once, instead of eating twenty two of them individually. I think my parents would only allow me to eat these once a day.

minieggs

Mini Eggs – One of the most popular street foods available in HK. Think mini waffles. Mmmm

Put chai ko – This is some kind of pudding, also very popular street food. I guess it translates to sticky rice pudding.

220px-whitesugarcake

White Sugar Sponge Cake – Mmm another popular snack. Now that I know what it translates to, it doesn’t seem all that healthy. Wikipedia: “While it is called a “cake,” it is never served as a circular round cake. It is usually purchased as an individual triangular piece or a mini square. The cake is spongy and soft, and sometimes has a slightly sour taste due to the fermentation of the batter before cooking. Like most Chinese cakes it is steamed, giving it a moist, soft, fluffy texture, as opposed to dry and firm.”

Mmmmmm

I would drink a dirty mud puddle over Yakult but I’m with you on Frutips + Haw Flakes + the last sponge cake thingy. I also loved: White Rabbit candy, Flower’s Kiss candy, + dried mango.

BTW the apple Frutips are pretty good. There is a different version that has mango and pineapple too but I’ve yet to find it.

Haha I was looking for those Haw candies recently and I couldn’t figure out what they were called. I remember eating one roll a day when I was a little kid in chinatown!
